Heated Washer Jets - Any good ?

Has anyone found their washer jets to be completely frozen up recently ? I have a good mix of water and screen wash that should not freeze.

The rear washer seems to un-freeze before the fronts and yet the engine is kicking in all that heat ???

If the car is driven for 15 miles or so and then I sit in traffic for a while they only then start to trickle and then work. Quickly freezing up again if not used regularly,

Maybe they are faulty or just not very good.

Would have hoped that the relatively mild freezing temps we have here would be no problem... how about you guys in the US and Europe who get proper freezing temps ?

Any advise on mix of wash and water ? How much does the bottle hold ? Does not say on the bottle itself. So may have the mix wrong of course Wink

I tend to just empty one of those 1 litre bottles from Halfords or Sainsburys into a five litre can and top up - this is because I'm lazy rather than scientific about the process.

Had a couple of minus 6's recently and no problems, but whether this was heated jets or mixture I dont know?

Does beg the question though, are they heated always or activated like the mirrors and front winscreen manually / program button?

The water is not the biggest problem with freezing it is the jets.

I seem to recall that the water is not heated until you have used it so many times in a few minutes when the temp is below a certain level. Not a good answer perhaps someone can put some meat on the bones! I'm off out to Croydon - I may be gone some time!

So if heated correctly they should de-frost and not freeze up again then ?

Funny is that the rear washer works before the fronts... but even so this takes a long time to happen.

Simon - I was just up the road from you on Saturday night. Outside temp showing -3C and no problem with the jets from start-up: a nice blast of hot steamy water onto the screen. I'd suggest there's a problem with the heated jets on yours...?

mmm thanks for that and never experienced steamy water from me jets so I guess they are duff then. By the way. Do you get a big - and I mean bigger than a few mills - patch of de-frosted bonnet around the jets ? All I get is a few mills and this is probably just heat from the engine bay working up through the lagging and the nozzle plastics.

Where were you on Saturday ?

I get about a 1cm patch around the jets. Matches the bigger patch above the FBH nicely!

I was near Wenlock with the in-laws and visiting my mum in Stretton. I may be in Ludlow this weekend (might take the kids to the Xmas Fair at the Castle) so if you fancy a beer at some point...
