Rapaid draining Battery
Hi All
I am hoping some of you may be able to help me out on a frustrating issue with my 2009 LR4.
From some point this summer i have been suffering from flat battery issues.
Initailly i didn't think too much of it, jump start continue. Then again. Jump start continue.
after the third time i suspected battery so i had it checked out. all reports came back with good status.
Still suffering from flat battery i started questioning the driving periods as i know i was only covering short very short distances so i though i could be draining it.
After washing it one day, i relapsed that the flat battery corresponded directly with having the boot open.
Now i know this, i haven't had a flat unless i leave the boot open for only a short time (15mins etc)
Just had it confirmed at Halfords - Battery checked out fine. Opened the boot and the battery rapidly lost 50 amps.
I have no ideas why this is happening.
Have you ever seen this fault and can it be rectified.

Hi,something doesn’t sound quite right here.
Do you mean there is a 50 amp drain when the boot is open, I can’t imagine that without a burning smell.
Maybe you meant 50mA,(0.05A).How did you measure this.Leaving doors open etc while cleaning will drain your battery.
How old is your battery,
is it agm or lead acid. I would suspect it’s loosing capacity to hold its charge.
Have you checked your charging rate.Charge the battery fully,disconnect the charger,wait 15 minutes and check the voltage,it should be 12.5 or more,then measure it again after about 12 hours.That’s a good start ,once you have checked out the alternator and battery you can start looking for parasitic draw.
You could also get one of those voltage monitors to plug into your lighter socket.

Ive had a parasitic draw on mine for the last 10 months, purchased a brand new AGM battery, had all the wiring chased, alternator checked and had the Body Control Module replaced and i still have it. I can just about get away with 24-30 hours with out needing a jump. Ive since purchased a NOCO Genius and leave it plugged in if Im not out and about in it daily.
Ive had 3 independent specialists and a veh electrician go through it and still non the wiser

No something definitely isn't right. I have had the car for four years. 3.5 of them with no issues what so ever. Even when camping and the kids in and out the car all the time - playing the boot too as they love it there. Then something seemed to of happened this summer.
In regards to the ampage not entirely sure. its a 920CCA battery and the Halfords chap checked it out
he said there was about 750 available under load, then we open the boot rechecked and he said it had dropped to 705 Amps - I am not too tech so not sure if this is right. but he checked and checked and he said the battery is definantly good and i should not buy another until i have sourced the cause of this drain.
Kamo 1 - I feel for you, it looks like am might not be alone with is rogue fault..
One thing to mention, i don't think its linked but the Air suspension compressor is playing up bit.
I have serviced it with new seal kit (OMG) nightmare. anyhow that as the only other thing that i thought could be linked as i thought the car might try and go into access mode when boot is opened - but i don't think this is the case. Any thoughts.

Ive found if i put mine in access mode overnight there is less of a drain... this may be incidental but its given me a slight (very slight) improvement
Thats because in access mode the car does not wake up to check the heights, so this is why its a slight improvement but a red hearing.
D4rum Have you had the boot handle checked out, as these are known to create a battery drain issue.
Also I wpuld not let a Halfords person change a bulb, never mind diagnose if a battery is good or not.

No i haven't had the boot handle checked out! Its never not worked. But do you think it could be a cause.
I have got and auto electrician lined up for early this week so hopefully he doesn't charge the earth and is able to solve the issue.
I almost went to Euro car parts today to buy another battery, just getting fed up as another flat this morning, but the better of me said to wait until i have a diagnosis. As the battery could be good i suppose.
True about Halfords. Not really sure where else to go for battery testing though.
Any thoughts around Milton Keynes Area ?

Hi Guys
The battery is 4 years old.
I have just got back from Euro car parts, i decided to get them to test it too and they actually tested it as faulty. it was only generating 680 cca rather then the 920CCA. So i have replaced it.
Amazing how halfords were testing as OK!
Fingers crossed it was the problem and thats there is not another gremlin lurking.

I hope this sorts your issues..... a tenner says it does!
So there are a few battery testers out there..... I had a good chat with an AA man who came to rescue my flat battery in a previous Navara. Long story short he had to "force" the battery to fail as he said the AGM's always pass the test even when we all know they are finished. He turned on everything he could in the car a ran the test, the battery then failed spectacularly and he was able to change it under the warranty.
When I asked why he did this, he replied that "if I let the machine decide your battery is fine - which it will - I will be back out to you tomorrow when it doesn't start again". He also said once the modern battery fails once it is finished and will never recover to its full potential again.
He was a good man.....
So I bet yours will now be fine.
PS... I hope you reset the BCM to tell the car its had a new battery.A mod a week until I have nothing to improve or add.

Yes i recon you are probably right, two days in and no issues so far. and the car seems to be pretty rapid to start once the button is pressed so all good there.
In regards to BCM. No i havent reset this. Is it something i can do? or does it need a large etc.
What is BCM and what can happen if its not reset?

If you replaced your battery with a like-for-like then you don't need to tell the BMS (Battery Management System)
As your car is starting and running well now I would suggest you don't need to do anything else.
