My usual tyre place seem unable to change a tyre without their equipment gouging into the inside of my rims during tyre removal. I could make good the surface by rubbing down to leave just small holes and it is on the inside (unseen) side of the wheel 'spose, so very much a first world problem.

Normal or change to different shop?

Definitely change tyre company…. Even with super low profiles I have on my other cars I have never had that… the bead breaker should be run around the wheel first and from that they should be able to lever the tyre off with absolute minimal contact… sometimes they place a plastic widget over the rim to protect the inner surface…
Sounds like your garage just does not care…

Out of interest, how long should alloys last? Mine are approaching 12 years and 140k miles and I’ve never done any maintenance on them.

Indefinitely…. Providing the paint /lacquer surface is intact they should exist forever…. The only wheels that have a tendency to have a shelf life are magnesium wheels…
The only time they start to degrade is when they oxidise when the elements get to them…
As an aside my father has an aluminium bench vice…went down to his shed recently and it’s now a pile of dust… the elements had got to it and just rotted it..

Unless their machine doesn't go wide enough to grip the edge of the rim it sounds like they are using somewhat quicker method of holding the wheels in place.
I bought my own tyre changer and balancer and so long as I'm careful there are no marks on the wheels at all.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

I've only had a problem once when a company damaged a wheel.
They told me they could not do them any more and bought me a replacement wheel.Series 1 V8
Series 2 Hibrid V8
Discovery 3 HSE V8
Quick update. Called elsewhere and no damage. New place showed me the ‘teeth’ option on their machine which was causing the problem. I was being fibbed to.....
