Lower steering column help
Hi guys, could do with some input as I’m close to tearing my hair out. Since January this year I’ve gone through 4x lower steering columns due to play and knocking, one lasted 3 months/2500 miles, one lasted 800 miles and the other 2 had play out of the box. It is 110% the column and not my truck, 2x columns failed with play in the ujs and 2x had play in the sliding section.
3x were the cheap £100 ones from one supplier and 1x was an allmakes one from another supplier. I had been advised to stay away from genuine from both suppliers as apparently they are poor quality. My question is should I go genuine this time or are they all a show and I’m going to have to put up with the knocking?
Thanks all.

Unfortuneatly its the other way round Genuine is the only one thats any good. If they told you otherwise you have been mis-sold goods.

Been there done that, fortunately only 1 lower shaft returned under warranty. New one checked at Indy's and found to have play in sliding section. Asked to see a genuine one and it was free of any slack either in the UJ or sliding section.
Go genuine, a little dearer, but worth it for accurate steering.

That’s a little disappointing to read considering I had upfront said I intended to spend the money and buy genuine unless recommended otherwise, and here I am...
Alphamale - I remember you posting about that, I’ve had your comments running round in my head from the moment the first column failed.
Thank you both for your responses, gives me some confidence to order a genuine one on Monday. Any recommendations where to purchase from other than Advanced?

Just checked them out, at that price it doesn’t make sense to go any other than genuine. Thanks for the heads up
Wish I knew how I could upload a video to the forum, the allmakes one I fitted had the most ridiculous play in it to the point where you could barely keep it on the road.
Thank you all for your responses, much appreciated.

Originals also have 12months warranty regardless of who fits them It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Just to close this out I purchased a genuine steering column from my local LR dealer and I’ve had no issues since (touches wood!). Reason being for not using island 4x4 was their warranty terms on genuine items could be something like a 4-6 week turnaround before a refund. Given my track record with these columns I didn’t want to risk being out of pocket that long.
Disappointingly the supplier of the 3x faulty columns (who actually is a site sponsor) got all arsey down the phone when I rang to discuss the 3rd out of the box failure, telling me it was all down to me and how it couldn’t possibly be his items. Surely if anyone should have been upset it should have been me after having to tackle this job so many times...
I must have spent a fortune with this company over the years but I won’t bother in future - not that they will care in the slightest. I’ve decided to swallow the £100 I am out of pocket for their faulty column rather than have to ever deal with them again.

If you're getting poor service from a sponsor then it's something perhaps that should be raised with the mods, as poor service to one customer is probably not a one off. I, for one, would like to know that the site sponsors offer good customer service to forum members.PAGODA

I agree with Pagoda, if you have a grievance with regard to poor service of any site sponsor it should not be buried, and you should not have to swallow it as well as being out of pocket.
After all, most members are very happy to "blow the trumpet" when sponsors provide exceptional service, and rightly so. Equally though, poor service must be called out as it may affect other members as well as the forum's reputation.
PM Martin or one of the Mod's and I'm sure they will offer support and advice to resolve it favourably, or otherwise yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Never had an issue with the OEM Britpart offering...
Britpart OEM?
Surely OEM is Original Equipment Manufacturer?
Definitely NOT Britpart.
Some of their parts ar OK but it is pot luck.
Their D3 parts seem to be the worst they make, possibly as they are plastic.
Thermostat manifold lasted a few months before leaking from the thermodtat joint held together by Cineese self tappers. 6 months more the plastic became porous and needed replacing.
Got through 2 header tanks, cap just fell on, before buying LR.
Some, not many, parts are same price from LR and next day so worth checking.Series 1 V8
