Just fitted a kit, the new nut isn't nylock or castellated with split pin. Does it not need some form of locking, or is it ok just to tighten ?

Which end of the ball joint are you referring to?
I change loads at work, the ball end is always a castle nut/split pin or one of them slightly crushed nuts, other end is either a clamp or a plain nut.

Looks like a self locking flange nut, as already mentioned, looking at the top, it will look slightly crushed and this is the locking part, you'll be able to screw it on by hand so far before you need a spanner.
