Need air con/climate control troubleshooting help
Hi,
2006 Disco3/LR3 front and rear air conditioning/climate control.
Symptom: blows warm.
Took it in to local garage for service as I suspected a leak. They did the basic service/did not see/find an obvious leak using their gas detector.
They refilled with gas at that time.
Truck came back and was blowing cold on the driver side and warm on the passenger side. Garage assumed this was an actuator issue.
Two days later, driver side is blowing warm again.
Took it back to garage and they told me that they evacuated the same amount of gas than they had put in and that they are drawing the blank and I need to take it to Land Rover.
I have an IID tool.
What are the typical issues with the A/C system assuming there is no leak? (I heard/read about rear/above compressor and condenser leak areas, not sure if I can double confirm those myself).

Read the codes with your IID, there will (should be) faults logged!yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Quick update.
It’s pretty hot in Virginia today but I went outside! )
IID Tool is not reporting any error I could see that was relevant to the ventilation system.
I’ve got nothing to compare against, so anyone that could confirm they see something similar in term of what can be reported by IID would help.
On the rear A/C unit, I can confirm that:
- insulated pipes are very cold
- not-insulated pipes are burning
- fan is turning at full speed
- air coming out of all the rear vents is warm
I have likely the same behavior up front, but the rear system is so much more accessible……

I did notice that the “global time” value fluctuate with me turning the floor/face knob of the rear control (along with heating something happening about it in the trunk as well).

(Oops…. Sorry! Just realized that IID was setup for French messages….. error codes still apply! Happy to translate anything you guys need to get)

I looked at screenshots I took and A/C system pressure varied from 56 to 72.5 psi.
Seems to be in line with what I read online is “acceptable”.
Actually…. I’m assuming I’m looking at “high pressure” side which would not be appropriate at all?

When A/C set to off, pressure of the system seems to be 175psi.
When running pressure drops to 52 psi. So that seems appropriate?
I performed the “check for issues” procedure pressing recirc and econ together switching the key to accessories and not see any error indication.
Process takes about 10s with “Econ “ blinking throughout, then A/C system turns on/resumes.
Maybe I had done this wrong (https://landroverforums.com/forum/lr3-28/lr3-heater-problem-39871/#post450914)
- turn off ignition
- press recirc and Econ buttons
- turn ignition to Acc
- Econ light blinks (when blinking, I release buttons)
- if I wait until Econ stops blinking, a/c system starts
- if I don’t wait and cycle acc-off-acc, then prog defrost LED blinks three times

Are the left and right blend actuators operating? Engine running. Live Values> (Complete list) select the left and right blend actuators, > View.
You should now be able to see the blend motors move from intermediate through to max as you turn the temp control knobs. It may take a few seconds to respond, also check the compressor motor draw which is in there too. Same applies to the face/foot actuators!
Keep playing with the controls and see if it will force a fault to be logged. I'm surprised there is not fault logged already as the system is obviously malfunctioning. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Not quite sure why the compressor (low side?) pressure would be so high when the compressor run since, according to the chart posted, it should be 10psi lower.

Ok…. So…. You might be onto something?
Move from cold to hot and back and ended with this:
So…. Where is this thing?

Yeah, that door is likely the problem. Thanks for the help so far!
I can’t seem to find where it is and how to get to it. Spent some quality time online looking through the workshop manual and so far, I’m at “you need to remove glovebox” part, which seems fairly easy.

Does this look like that would go anywhere?
Found it at the bottom of the front console. I don’t think of any place that would have such a spring. But I can’t think of how this would have gotten there either if this was not a part of the truck either.
Thoughts?
Could it be part of the A/C vent setup (and explain my lack of cold air beyond the left blender motor/actuator?

I suppose it could be but I can't say I recognise it. It looks like a small version of an old clockwork spring!
How old did you say your car was? yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Still don’t understand why the rear A/C setup does not produce cold air. Assuming the system is charged (which the local garage told me it is; I also assume they checked both low and high pressures are ok), then even if the blend up front it not correct the rear vents should blow cold air (both above rear seats and boot/trunk vents). Unless somehow the controller is not happy with what’s happening up front and that, somehow, messes up everything.
I also tried to get the stepper motors to move visually (the three I could access, apparently, there are two more, need to locate them) and I could not get them to do anything. Maybe this is due to the lack of blower (I broke the blades by putting my hand in it…. Smart…. So I removed it while replacement is on the way).
