D4, need new steering rack
Hi
I am having som problems with play in my steering wheel (approx 2cm)
I have changed both the low steering column and also changed both the inner and outer track rods on both sides, but still 2cm play in the steering wheel when driving.
It is annoying when I have to work with the steering wheel all the time on the highway.
Somebody have a smart tips for me or do I have to change my steering rack?
And where can I buy the steering rack cheap on nett?

Did you fit genuine column components, none OEM column components are a known failure from new only genuine are successful. Check the stud is tight that clamps the two shafts together, this is one place where there can be play.
Have you checked the lower swivel joints?- jack the wheels of the ground and check for any movement.
Site sponsor advancedfactors with site discount code, or rimmerbros Lincoln, both ship abroad. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

You have said that you fitted a new lower steering shaft, but did you fit an after market one or genuine Land Rover part?
I ask this because I had exactly the same problem with my D3 some 2 years ago. I changed everything from the steering wheel to the track rod ends, except the lower steering shaft that was relatively new (1 year, so surely it couldn't be the problem could it?) but I still had 50mm play at the steering wheel.
I decided to do one final check of everything and used a borescope to look for anomalous movements in the lower shaft. At first I didn't notice anything, but then I saw something odd about the movement where the inner part of the shaft enters the outer one (the collapsible section). So I took out the shaft and examined it and found the source of my problem. The grease packing in the shaft had leaked out passed the the seal and when I tested the shaft I found there was 5º of play i.e. for every 1º play there was 10mm at the steering wheel.
I bought a new genuine LR shaft, but not before checking for play in Another make. I found that the cheap one, I might have bought because of the cost saving, had 2º play out of the box, but when I checked a genuine one it was spot on. The test was as simple as holding the two ends of the shaft and trying to counter rotate them. I believe my supplier no longer stocks the cheaper one after finding faults in others.
So for the present save your money and examine the lower shaft for any rotational play at all.
