It was someone that never had the words "maintenance" or "replacement" enter his mind.

Same deal on the wifes BMW x3, which is in for a recall having its timing chain and tensioners replaced...It is at the back of the engine, as they "thought" it would never need intervention. whole engine out job

I can see why the HPFP would need little touching if it was a chain...but a belt !?

Mines just been in to have the belt changed but unfortunately they could not do the rear belt because apparently somebody has cut all the wires to the ECU and spliced them so they have no way of disconnecting the wiring to get into to change the belt haven't seen it yet picking it up later this morning. however the good news is that the front belt had been changed so we believe the rear one might have been as well

I would be asking questions and taking a good look as I do not see it can be done with body on.

My local Land Rover dealer reckons they can change rear camshaft oil seals on a 3.0 without taking the body off! Shocked

It was done by a LR main dealer who I trust, and if it snaps in the future I've got the receipt to show the work was [in theory] done. Has anyone got access to the workshop manual that main dealers use? Does that still require the body to be removed or is there a revised method?

But how long does it take them? Whistle

In all honesty, the belt probably can be done with the body on, but looking at to what has to come off, and what would be a struggle, it would likely be cheaper to lift the body...

Book time for a belt is 2 hours according to LR!

Rear cam seals 3.3 hours.

It can be done in situ. I have replaced a few.
Little bit more fiddly due to being timed, but in all not a terrible job. About as difficult as the first time I did a 2.7 belt! Wink
You do need the special tools though for both timing and undoing the sprocket bolt if nec.
Before disturbing the sprocket bolt it's best to check the timing. With the new belt on, as quite often they are correctly timed after renewing the belt.

Regards
Steve

Hi Steve,
Just started to try change pump belt but can't understand how it is possible to change with body on.
What do you mean with sprocket bolt?
I cant even get my hands down and feel cover except on right side looking from front of car looking in engine bay.

Impressed of all that has made this with body on.. Bow down

Its tight but you need to remove all the harnesses, the metal bracket that holds the harness. You also need to remove the bolt hold the pipe on to the rear belt cover.

To push the pipe back far enough you need to remove the spring clip on the rubber breather hose and shove this back so the pipe moves back .

The D4 rear belt is a lot tighter for room, you do not need any special tools to fit the rear belt, just dexterity and patience .

Flack Thumbs Up

Thanks.
Harness is still to go,cool pipe is away and is now trying to get rid of harness bracket.Breather hose/pipe loose also.
Do you mean that tool da6120 is not needed?

I thought I was up for a challange when changing timing belt but this is a higher level..
