Rattling catalytic convertor
Hi all, our 2010 D4 has developed an annoying tinkling sound from the rear of the engine bay.
Our regular LR man tells me it’s a bracket on the cat and c£1k replacement exhaust is the answer.
Any experiences?
Thanks

£1k my foot.
Whilst working safely, perhaps take it from the car to avoid a fuel fire etc, find a man who knows his welding and re-attach the bracket.

there was also a tec recall for the centre silencer box that rattles when at idle managed to get mine done but was hard work even though i had just purchased it from l/r dealer approved (apparently) sounded like a noisy air suspension compressor
search is your friendplease excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick, thankyou

This sounds just like my issue. Do you have any more details on that recall or what the actual cause was?

you could hear mine if you got under the car with it running,i found that if you pressed down on the rear silencer it would go away
as for the recall l/r where not at all helpful but i only had the car for 1 day when the problem appeared and got if fixed under used approved although i virtually had to reject the car to get anywhere as l/r insisted exhaust wasn't covered under used approved
i wasn't happy with the repair as the std exhaust is one peace and the repair consisted of a replacement centre box that was cut and clamped in place (£800 it was) but its been ok for nearly 3 yrs now but typical poor l/r cust service left a real bad purchase taste that will come back in my throat every time i visit a l/r dealership
the problem is baisically the baffle plates inside the silencer come loose and vibrate at idle you could try squashing the box with some sort of clamp for a temp repair and look for a used box as theres plenty of spares available online and i think you can buy the clamps from l/rplease excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick, thankyou

Hmm, I will have another look and see if it is that specifically. The noise mostly comes from under the nearside doors rather than the back. Can you remember if it made the whole exhaust vibrate?

I had the same thing in my MY2012. Noisy rattle at idle but just needed a blip on the gas to change the engine speed and it stopped resonating. The permanent fix was a combination of loosening the exhaust clamps and twisting the joints ever so slightly AND a well placed blow with a plastic faced mallet on the rattley silencer. Never heard a peep from it after that.D1 300Tdi - gone
D2 Td5 ES (Alive remapped...mmm) - sadly gone
D4 2012 SDV6 XS - Stolen
D4 2014 SDV6 HSE - Shiny

Thanks for that info gents. I'm going to try that right now.
@eightfoot By centre box, do you mean this?
If yes, which of those two boxes was making the noise? The funny looking one or the other?

FYI, applying some pressure with my foot to the n/s rear silencer did indeed mostly stop the noise.

if its noisy all the time at idle just put your ear near each one to see which one needs a clump it will be obvious
ps you sure its not the heat guard on the silencer or covering the prop thats loose or above the rear silencerplease excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick, thankyou

I've ran my hands around the back of those two boxes and it is all clear, no contact with the heat shield so far as I can tell. I'll get the camping mallet out and ready and have a proper listen later. If I can narrow it down, I'll give it a whack and see if it helps. Otherwise, I'll just keep an eye out on the bay for a used centre section, nothing doing right now.
