Rear end rattle on bumpy roads |
|
Hi,
I'm getting a suspension sounding rattle at the rear on bumpy roads. I'm thinking possibly the ARB?
Having watched some YouTube videos on the rear arms that is not a job I would want to tackle but the ARBs seem fairly simple - unless I am missing something - please share wisdom...
My experience level - I've changed the running gear on 5 old VWs to include subframes, wishbones, bushes etc but then I didn't use those cars as a daily so could take my time.
Cheers

May just be the weights above the exhaust pipes moving around, worth a check... Never say never! After all, I bought a LandRover

It can be pretty much anything in the back… ARB is more of a clunk in my experience than a “rattle”. Could be drop links of course.
On my D3 a rattle nowadays means that yet another JLR washer has rusted/eaten through an aluminum heat shield and a larger washer is required. There are (at least on the V8) one heat shield between the plastic rear bumper and the exhaust pipes on both sides. You could check them and manually try to rock/dislodge the shield. It’s pretty obvious if it moves.

Thanks. I'll get a look at it tomorrow. It's having a gearbox flush and transfer box change by Ian Bodsy on my drive.
It is more clonky than high pitched rattle and only on rutted country lanes at say 20-30mph. I remember a previous car used to rattle on the front over bumpy surfaces that turned out to be arb bushes but that more a metallic rattle like a load of bolts in a metal bucket. Similar symptons at low speeds though. Land Rover(s) : '10 Discovery 4

Lovely job done by Ian. Gearbox looked to be original oil (prev owner and I thought that was the case) but the diff oil looked like it had been replaced.
Drop links "look ok" but need to do the propshaft soon and a clip on the wishbone for the handbrake cable.
I found those weights at the the back end behind exhaust - not sure what's normal for movement but they do swing and will hit something metal with not a lot of hand pressure. Land Rover(s) : '10 Discovery 4

100% correct It's in for service and the drop links are battered haha. I'm pleased it wasn't the rear arms this early on into my ownership. Land Rover(s) : '10 Discovery 4

mines in soon for rear upper arms there was no noise driving .infact the only issue driving was a bit of rear end wander towing my caravan but nothing scary .mine has one inner bush collapsed completely giving a good inch or so in out movement at the wheel .apparently its a common issue on discos every four or five years

Interesting cheers I didn't know that but good to know in future.
My arms have some slight cracking on the bush but no movement yet - I will get them done next year. Land Rover(s) : '10 Discovery 4
