As said above if you want to reply and your reply is available for all to read in the forum thread.
If you want to reply by PM (private message) then click on the PM button (bottom left) and only that person will be able to read your reply

i was trying to send to the person writing the comment instead of at the bottom of the thread so they knew what i was responding to
Nested replies aren't a feature of this forum software. All comments post in date / time order within each threadI know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

This pic illustrates my question perfectly. Why do I not have a "quote" button on the last post of the thread? Every post bar the last one has a quote button, but it never appears on the last post. I can see from the capture it's not just me.
Yes, I can insert quotes manually, but it just seems a bit inconsistent.

If you’re replying to the last post in a series you won’t need to quote as your reply will appear below it.. if you only want to include part of the previous post then use the quote function in the menu bar…
I do know what you mean but if that function was there then it would get very very over used without serving any real purpose…I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!
