2010 LR4 transmission gone crazy. HELP
Hello fellow Land Rover S&Mers
2010 LR4 threw a fit today. It started by throwing a Transmission Fault on the screen while on highway. I pulled off on the 1st dirt road to investigate.
Shifted it into P where it proceeded to get stuck. The screen claimed it wasnt in P (even though the shifter was most definitely in P and stuck there).
Tried cycling ignition / alarm, didnt help.
Nanocom scan of (permanent) brought up these fault codes:
1. ECU: Engine Management - P0615 Started Relay Circut
2. ECU: Engine Management - P0700 Transmission control system (malfunction indicator lamp request)
3. ECU: Automatic Gearbox - P0915 Gearshift position - circuit range/performance
4. ECU: ABS system - U0402 Invalid data received from transmission control module
5. ECU: Transfer Case - U0402 Invalid data received from transmission control module
After playing with it for a while (pulling the cup hold and the red strap) managed to get it started and drive. During the driving it seemed to randomly shift in and out of D (according to the dash letter indicators. Managed to limp it to a safe place.
After all that it threw additional codes which a sadly didnt take screenshots of but from memory it was all sorts of ECUs having trouble talking with the transmission.
Anyone have any ideas where to start diagnostics with this?

I would be looking into U 3003-62 battery voltage as the possible cause of the other issues. It could be a failing battery or a bad earth somewhere as the D4 is very sensitive to voltage fluctuations which can case all sorts of warning lights and error messages and other problems. Check the battery voltage and all the engine/gearbox to body earth straps for damage or corrosion. Good luck!

Thank you for the input
The battery has been tested and shows no signs of failing. Went over the obvious earths and seem seem good (we're not in a climate which salts the roads - so much less corrosion issues).
Could I be missing some other earthing points? Does someone have a list/chart?
Further update - after clearing codes and letting the D4 cool down everything is ok. It seems to all go crazy after things warm up. Calm highway driving was fine for ~100km. Pushing it 20-30km and then up a hill will set of the errors.
So far really seems that its somehow temp related.

Do a search on here for (DTC U3003) which has some helpful info but no real outcomes sadly but there is a link to a D3 wiring diagram!

Have you checked the linkage on the side of the gearbox? Could be part seized or detached? Just a thought.
On my car the gearbox linkage has a tendency to slide a little on the cable from the gear stick over time. When this happens the transmission starts to intermittently drop out of D even though the stick is in correct position. It could be an easy thing to check if that is the case for you as well.

Hi,
When you say "drop out of D" what did it drop into? What were the symptoms?
Mine goes insane. The dash screen can stop showing any letter at all. The shifter gets stuck in park. Using the white button to physically release it - and the position letters go nuts.... It can show R but not N all sorts of strange gremlins. And best of all in this panic attack state it wont start.
Oh, it's rather undramatic for me. When it happens I notice that the revs go up and that the transmission in practice is in neutral. But the dash and stick indicates D. No faults or anything signalled. So what I do is press the stick firmer rearward and then D is resumed by the transmission. Then I know it is time to crawl under the car and move the linkage a little and loc-tite and re-tighten the connecting screw. It has happened twice and now it is more than a year since last time.
Your problem seems far worse and perhaps not at all related to my glitch that produces much lighter symptoms. So my suggestion is perhaps not a possible cause for your situation.

I wound say it sounds like your linkage cable is loose or seized. It’s easy to see. Right hand side of the gearbox. Do a search on here for “linkage” or look in the wiki for details.

It doesn't seem to be the linkage. Gut feeling is an electrical gremlin.
Going to dig into the gearbox next, more specifically the harness pass through plug thingee which goes to the electrics within the gearbox.

Sadly not yet.
Swapping in a new battery seems to have made things a little better, but still has its fits of gremlin insanity.
