Glueing high mounted stop lamp
Hi all,
My high mounted stop lamp aka third brake light almost fell off and since I could not find a repair with pictures I thought it best to document mine here.
The plastic housing came loose on the highway. 3/4 of the sealant didn't adhere. The lamp was replaced a year before.
Of course 1/4 of the housing was bonded pretty strongly to the tailgate. I wanted to save the housing so I used fishing line and wooden handles to cut through the kit and not scratch the plastic (or the paint.) I had to replace the line a few times but this worked pretty well. I cleaned the plastic housing and the tailgate up as much as I could. The sealant on the tailgate was stubborn.
I primed *both* surfaces, the tail gate as well as the plastic of the 3d brake light. Since the primer dissolved the rather pristine plastic, this made me think the previous repair was done without primer.
I put masking tape around the edges to protect the paint from Idiots With Tools (aka me) but also to mark out the alignment. This proved useful.
I paid special attention to clipping the connector of the lamp in it's place so it doesn't bounce around (and break eventually.)
I bought the official Land Rover kit to be sure I used the correct sealant and primer. For reference, here are the sealant and primer from the kit.
I hope this will proof useful to someone. Maybe to myself in the future.

Great job, looks like getting the thing out was the hard part! I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Thanks! It took patience, not a lot of time. Maybe 20 minutes and it was out and in one piece.

When my scratched and scored high mounted stop light went for replacement (delivered like that from brand new from LR FFS! - QC as normal) - it was away on the back of a low loader to some 100 miles away for a week or more... came back with said stop light shattered in pieces in a box... so clearly not an easy job... so well done!
Waiting now on the delivery of a Discovery Sport PHEV (can't justify anything bigger now) .... R Dynamic HSE ... just 5 months wait so far for FS.... Covid, Suez Canal, Fire in Taiwan, LR putting all their eggs in one basket and the list is almost endless .... at least a 6 month wait or much more before delivery.... will I ever get it.... I'm missing driving a LR big time.. stuck in the wifes Auris.... :-{
Zappi charger been sitting on the wall waiting for months .....
