Recommend me an emergency jump starter

Early next year my car will be sitting for 5 weeks unused, and it doesn't like sitting for 2 weeks let alone 5 without draining the battery, so I've been thinking about getting one of the above.
We also have a motorhome (2.3L diesel) so it would be handy for that as like any motorhome there are periods where it sits unused for a while.
Anyone have practical experience of a starter pack....looking to pay no more than about £150, but here seem to be loads available Confused

Hi Euan,

Have you perhaps considered a solar panel? We used to have issues with one of our cars too. If it was left for a week, it struggled to start upon our return. It turned out that the battery fitted (original) wasn’t really big enough for the job. As an experiment, I bought the smallest solar panel from Maplin just to give it a try. Lo and behold, it did keep the battery topped up enough so that the car started without a problem. I realise that the D4 would need a larger one, but...........

Just a thought (and possibly a much cheaper alternative)?

Nigel.

Hi,

I've got this one Ring 320A Li-Ion Power Pack 12V (think it was tested in land rover international or monthly and got praise there) and although not used for our D4 I've used it on out 4.0 V8 D2 and TD4 freelander without problem. The D2 has a battery drain (that I need to find) and will not turn over after about 10 days, starter pack has worked each time

I bought mine from Machine Mart, it's a 3000 some thing( I will check the exact name and type later) five years ago. I have used it regularly in winter to start 90hp tractors, whilst it will not start a big diesel on its own it will give the batteries a big enough boost to start even poor starting engines.
I have been very impressed with the new generation of jump starters for petrol and small Diesel engines, they will almost fit in the glove box, certainly worth looking into as mine is very heavy, around 30kilos.

It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Euan

Totally over the top; but I really fancy this very small 150Wh Lithium battery power pack which offers:-

Clean inverter output (230V) powers loads of up to 100W; and

3 x 12V and 2 x USB connectors for device charging and to power lights

https://www.portablepowertech.com/product/ppt-powerpack-100/

I'm very tempted to buy this, plus a compatible solar panel and I'd love peoples views on this great "toy".

More realistically though have a look at this thread:-

I would worry about knowinly letting a battery discharge to that state as one day it will not recover and the cost will be very high to replace. A top-up solar panel is about £15. It could plug into the tow socket where there is a direct line to the battery.

Just a quick update. After deciding I didn't want to lug around one of the bigger heavier "professional" units, I spoke to a friend who recommended one of these, so I pulled the trigger.
I haven't used it yet, but first impressions of the unit itself are good...it's of high quality construction, using high quality materials.
The unit comes in a rigid protective storage pouch, and is probably slightly bigger than the size and weight of a house brick.
It comes with various attachments, an in-built LED light, and can be recharged on the move through a 12v socket, or mains. It can also recharge phones etc through USB ports and includes leads for that.
The customer feedback seems very good, so I'll have to wait to see if it does what it says it does..It was also fully charged on arrival.

Ok just used the unit in anger for the first time, as the motorhome battery was completely dead.
The instructions say to check its 100% charged, but as the vehicle is stored offsite I didn't get the chance to check first.
On switching on the unit it was showing 78% charged, and it started the van first time from a completely flat battery so I'm pleased with the result Very Happy
The van engine is a Fiat Ducato 2.3L multijet diesel, and with one jump the unit showed a drop to 51% which suggests you probably get 3 possibly 4 goes at starting a flat battery from full charge.
Instructions suggest some batteries might need connected to the unit for 20-30 seconds before attempting to start, so I suppose the drop in charge level would also depend on how long you have it attached to the battery terminals before attempting to start the engine ?
Anyway, I'm pretty pleased with that
Motorhome now back at home and connected to my CTEK MX10 so a pretty good result all round.
