LR 5.0 vs Jag 5.0 Engine? |
|
Hello all! I'm new to the forum, but not really all the new to the LR4. I'm currently working on an engine swap project for my LR4, and have a question I'm hoping someone can answer for me.
Does anyone know the difference between the Land Rover 5.0 engine and the Jag 5.0 engine? More specifically, can I use one as a long block for the other?
Long story even longer, I need to rebuild the engine in my LR4. Rather than have the car down for several months while waiting on machine work, I figured I'd just buy a used engine as a "long block." Since I'm replacing the pistons, rods, injectors.....and pretty much everything else, a cheap used engine will be fine for my build.
Here's the kicker, the Jag engines appear to be about $1-$2K cheaper......but as I understand it, they're mechanically identical to the LR 5.0 engines. The software is a little different, that I know, but has anyone ever done a LR to Jag or Jag to LR swap before?
Just want to make sure this doesn't fall into the category of, "They're almost the same.....but just enough different to make this almost impossible."
Thanks! 2010 LR4

Yes, it's the petrol variant, they don't bless us with the Diesel version over here.
Such is life! I can think of worse things that 510HP in an LR4 2010 LR4

I think you'll have more luck on the US forums... I think there are only a handful of imported LR4 V8's in the UK and I doubt anyone here will have much detailed engine specific knowledge.
What happened to your engine? A rebuild might be the safer option as you might find subtitle differences in compatibility between cylinder head and blocks of differing years etc.

Thanks for the advice, I didn't know the V8 LR4 was mainly a US thing. It's a shame, the V8 was a great platform! Although I'd love to get my hand on a diesel version too.....
As for the engine, I've got a head gasket that's leaking and it's time to do the timing chains. Rather than rebuild in place, I'm going to remove the engine and rebuild it then. However, I'm also planning on upgrading to the supercharged engine from the RRS....so it's kind of a hybrid rebuild. That said, it's also my daily driver, so limiting the downtime is critical, and machine shops around here tell you 2 weeks, then you get your parts back 6 months later! I also don't want to pay $8K for a used engine that I'll have to. spend another $2K rebuilding. So it's basically a time and money issue.....but isn't it always? 2010 LR4

Yeah we just got the reliable old 4.4 V8 LR3's here... still a Jag AJ-V8 engine but only 300bhp odd.
I am surprised the 5.0 isn't enough power for you? Arn't you going to have a nightmare changing the ECU's if you swap to the supercharged version?

Yeah, we had an LR3 and loved it so much we took the plunge on an LR4 when they were first released over here.
As for the swap, I don't think it'll be too bad. I've already sourced all the modules, and all that's left is to either rebuild my NA 5.0 into the SC version, or buy a donor and rebuild that....then install it of course.
As for power, yes, 375HP is probably all I need.....but is it really ever enough? 510HP would just be so much nicer! 2010 LR4

It’s usually the sumps that are different. But can’t answer your Q
Reminds me of that Sam crack YouTube video.
How many times did he rebuild that RR 5.0 SC trying to get it running.

Yeah, I've been hearing that the oil sumps and pans are slightly different, and that the accessories on the LR are "water resistant."
I'm guessing those are the mods required to let the engine basically driver underwater and at crazy angles.
As for the "economy".......well, I find it better to ignore it and pretend it's better than it is.
Seriously though, I imagine it'll get somewhere in the neighborhood of 13-14mpg in town 18-20 on the highway, which is similar to what we've seen in the NA LR4.......unless of course I'm having fun driving it! than I think the whole gallons to the mile analogy is WAY more accurate! 2010 LR4
