D3 Manual - Rumble from Rear - Acceleration AND Deceleration
Hi all,
About 5k ago I took the body off and put in a new turbo, rebuilt all rear suspension, all air suspension valves and compressor, brakes, cross over pipe, 1 head off for new glow plugs etc etc...and fitted a new OEM rear prop as I did have a bit of almost undefinable “noise” at the rear and the centre bearing rubber was stuffed.
Once I had it off the car I could feel the UJs were stuffed too. So once it was all back together I assumed all would be silent. It wasn’t....
Roll on 5k and now it’s a definite rumble on acceleration and deceleration. Goes quiet if knocked into neutral. Not very obvious below 40mph or above 75mph. Damn near can’t hear it at 90 odd.
I’m thinking rear diff is on the way. I did change all tranny oils for correct types and quantities about 11k ago. She’s done 120k now.
Any one else had similar?
With diffs in the past I’ve only tended to hear it on acceleration OR deceleration, not both.Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Manual 2004

My front diff failed at about 120k. Easiest thing to know, is to drain the oil and look for metal shrapnel.
See the image with the metal filings in my post.
