Overlanding / Wild camping

Hi,

I am looking for a site for wild camping / overlanding. It was my sons 22st in January and as we were unable to do anything we planned 21 experiences for the year one of which was wild camping.

Ideally we are looking for somewhere that is wooded but accessible with the D3, so we can drive close by then build a shelter to sleep in. Basic facilities would be nice but not essential.

I've found a few but most of them are a bit far for us to get a weekend in, we are in between Manchester and Leeds. One site in Leicester want £80 a night for a clearing in the woods, which is a bit extortionate considering we pay less than that for a serviced caravan pitch in Cornwall in August. I've found a couple in mid Wales but they're about 3 hours away, however I'd rather go there than pay £80 a night for no facilities!

So, can anyone recommend anywhere within about 2 hours of Manchester/ Leeds?

Thanks

Have you tried Wikicamps, agree 80.00 per night to wild camp is outrageous!! I know there is a new one in North Wales which has opened up recently and charges 30.00 per night. Wild_camping_Wales on Instagram. Pretty sure is Mold ways.

My suggestion would be to park at the top of Snake Pass in the lay by then hike towards Bleaklow or Kinder Scout from there.

You're on top of the moors, so no uphill to worry about and you're not far from civilisation if it all gets a bit cold.

Just stay out of the way and don't build a fire Thumbs Up

You could also probably find somewhere near Holme Moss, I suppose it depends how much of a hike with the gear you fancy.

For all that you ask for you have a couple of semi wild options in the form of Coco wild camping and Nash oakland camping

Its about as wild as you will get in this country vehicle camping without really annoying locals

both are contactable via facebook - alternatively and as it may link up with the other 20 - Highland All terrain who also trade as 4x4 tours scotland or "Roads less travelled" up in scotland as well

There's a Bothy half way along Strata Florida that you're allowed to stay overnight in FOC. And if you really want to sleep under canvas there's plenty of space to do that too.

So you could mix the best green lane in the UK (even LRO International say that) alongside some of the best scenery you'll see anywhere

I watched a couple of Youtube videos on Strata Florida and it does look amazing. I do intend to do this but it will probably be next year now. For this trip I just needed a "Nearly Wild" site, bit like Nash Oakland, but a bit closer to me. I have found 3 possibilities, so think I am good now.

Fingers crossed for Strata Florida next year!
