Thumping when accelerating from standstill |
|
i have noticed that when i go to accelerate out of a junction (especially in the wet) i get a thumping noise from underneath if i do it with any gusto but only if i have a bit of steering lock on-wont do it in a straight line no matter how hard i accelerate
Its hard to describe but its as though a spline is slipping and grabbing?? Not sure if its mechanical or electrical(i.e traction control being over sensitive)
I have also noticed that if i have the 4x4 info on the centre diff lock light regularly turns red momentarily when setting off from standstill
Anyone else had this or can shed any light, its due a cam belt change soon so will be making a trip to JAS if i cannot get to the bottom of it Previous Discos

Could be an abs sensor giving dud info, or even mismatched tyres, are they all pumped up correctly? Steering angle sensor maybe?
I’m sure it will be an easy fix.

I think the centre diff lock illuminating red is normal, every LR model ive ever driven that has that function (DS, Evoque, RRS) the lock symbol shows partial or full engagement momentarily when pulling away or being enthusiastic round corners as the TC kicks in to ensure safety etc 2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

Could the sound be because the rear prop bush has gone? Have you had it done? You could look for a split. Believe you may have to take off an underside tray/protection to see though.
Good luck

All the tyres are matched and correct pressure (only done a couple of thousand miles) but also did it with old tyres
Never noticed the red difflock light before but to be honest i have never looked before
Gareth may be onto something with the abs sensors, may try with dsc turned off and see if it makes any difference and will connect iid tool and see if there are any strange readings
prop was replaced about 15k ago before i got the car but will have a poke around
thanks for the pointers guys Previous Discos

Marsie, did you resolve your thumping issue? My Discovery 3 shows similar symptoms —slight thump/clunk when setting off from a stop while turning. It’s not “hard”, like you said it is almost like slack being taken up and then something catching. It’s not present at high speeds or when setting off straight.

Similar symptoms to mine. Yes, was cured by changing the oil in the transfer box (twice) and doing an adaption reset/calibration. Must have been slipping/locking due to old oil but improved after one oil change and cured after 2 oil changes
Hopefully yours will be a similar issue and not something more expensive

Thank you, marsie!
Transfer Box was one of two suspected culprits I have not eliminated. I’ve eliminated CV shafts, steering rack, tie rods/arms, and sway bars. I checked a few other things for good measure —all fine (wheel bearings, control arms, ball joints).
While crawling around I did notice a small leak from my transfer box seal. I’ve actually ordered some fluid for it (expensive and not available at stock parts stores) so I could eliminate this from the list. Previous owner drained and refilled about 15 months ago. With a slow leak, the fluid level may have dropped enough to start causing problems. I’ll do the refill and calibrate, along with clearing the breather tube and hopefully that nips the problem long enough for me to rebuild the box. Vehicle is sitting until I can swap fluid.
