Quality of the aftermarket full length roof rails.

Hello all,

Just joined the forum, but been a longtime watcher(!)

Bought a 62 plate D4 a few weeks ago and want to add a few bits, with a view to travelling with it in the future. At the moment it has to stay a family car, as its the main job it was bought for. Replacing a Flr2 that wasn't big enough when we put in the buggy, child seat, dog, other child and 2 adults!

Anyway, I kept my FLR 2 Front runner roof rack and wanted to fit the tray to the D4. The rack is 1750mm long, so not quite the same length as the Front runner rack for the D4, a bit longer than the short version. It is the same width though.

I have the half length rails on the car, and was looking to buy the full length rails from the likes of ebay. Then mount the front runner tray to the rails using the plate and coach bolt fittings as used on the Thule roof bars.

The question is, has anyone had any issues with the aftermarket full rails? Soft or cracking? Im not looking to mount a roof tent on there, but would like the option to carry longer items and maybe a bike or canoe

Front runner will sell me the parts to extend my current rack and then the rail fitting kit for their original
rack, but its circa £550 by the time they are provided and including post.

General comments on the after market ones are always about the plastic bits ... never quite as good as LR kit and best fitted on a warmer day as they feel almost brittle when cold.

But for about £100, the metalwork is indiscernable from genuine.

Thanks Dean,

The genuine ones are about £350 new, aftermarket about £130.

Will have a look at the plastics to see the quality.
