Euro 6

Is it possible to modify an engine to be Euro 6 compliant? My 2010 D4 is Euro 4 and, from June 2023, won’t be able to enter Glasgow’s low emission zone. Wondering what the likelihood is of me being forced to scrap a perfectly serviceable car and dump a load of new emissions on the planet by replacing it.

NO is the very simple answer.

To become Euro 6 compliant, you need to change the transmission to an 8 speed with stop start, so 2014 onwards and then you need to change the engine management and ancillary components to allow for the use of Adblu.

You'll basically be needing to fit a complete driveline and exhaust etc from a much later car. It's not economically feasible.

Seems a total waste of a good car.

You won't be scrapping it. You'll be selling it, to buy an EU6 car...

The value will have dropped a bit, I'd expect.... and when I got the Disco, I had a much better paying job (financial director) than I do now (teacher), so funds probably won't stretch to another Landy.

The LEZ is only the city centre (which is a pain to drive in at the moment anyway! ) So should not be that big a deal to avoid surely? Anytime we go into Glasgow we always park on the outskirts and normally walk in or get the underground as its easier than driving!

Which will cost way way more than buying a newer Euro 6 version! Whistle

its going to be interesting to see how this all pans out....will the price of fuel continue to rise BUT STILL BE AVAILABLE...so we can keep our vehicles running....or will the fuel be cut off to encourage electric take up....we remember the diesil fiasco from old...WHO CAN WE TRUST TO BELIEVE

Even when you have done all that it would not be qualified as euro 6 im afraid as it cannot be changed.

So faced with a possible enforced decision, now may be a good time to reflect on the priorities that led to you choosing the Disco in the first place. Was it the seating? Luggage space? Towing? Regular off-road use?

If the answer is more emotive (I really like how it looks) rather than a practical imperative, it may be you find you will be able to reset your priorities to come up with a different answer.
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

They are doing this in Manchester (mines a Euro5) but looking into it, its not for family cars (only van, trucks and taxi’s) ..but I guess its the thin edge of the wedge

Is it definitely non compliant cars for Glasgow too?

Edinburgh is the same. I’m currently looking at maybe changing ours out as I do not need the 7 seats. Problem is it’s a do anything car. I occasionally tow our big twin axle caravan so I need to take that into consideration. Bottom line is just don’t drive into the city centres ?

Birmingham's LEZ came in to effect on 1st July. Plenty of warning and you can still get around the ring road without issue. Would just have to park further away and catch a bus/tram/taxi/VOI scooter/rent-a-bike etc or leave the motor at home and train it into the city.

I'll be keeping my D4 and as and when the time comes, I'll get something to comply with LEZ and save fuel or go electric if thats the way we're heading.
