Front right wheel noise and lots of heat!
Hi all,
I've got what sounds like a worn bearing on my front right wheel on my Disco 3. It's v loud at motorway speeds and the ABS kicks in going round motorway turn offs at 60mph. After parking it up after a short motorway drive the heat from the wheel was incredible.
After looking on here it sounded more like the brakes were binding, so based on other ideas I replaced the caliper. Problem is still there and no better. I thought maybe the discs were now warped after all the excess heat but using a DTI there isn't much if any difference between both front discs.
The bearing doesn't feel worn when I grab the wheel and try and shake it so I'm not sure what it could be? The problem occurred suddenly and not gradually like you'd expect with a bearing that was wearing itsellf out?
Has anyone got any thoughts?

Could also be a 'dry' CV joint on the drive shaft (just the other side of the disc so to speak).
Worth having a look around to see if you have a gaiter that's all torn up (and signs of excessive grease loss) maybe?

i think you need to look at the brakes again as the only thing that will cause the brakes to heat up is pressure on them,all you have to do is find what it causing the brake pad to be pressured onto the disc
also to check the bearing jack it up and put a long bar between the ground and the tyre then up/down movement your not going to check accurately by shaking it

Thanks but the gaiter looks in great condition, no marks or tears on it.

Thanks eightfoot, I'll have another look at the caliper and I'll give the long bar idea a go, I'd have never thought of that!

check the rubber flexi hose to the brake caliper they can degrade inside and work a bit like a one way valve for the fluid .2005 discovery 3 tdv6

Comparing the discs then it can't be the bearing. The shiny one is the one causing me all the trouble! I'll try replacing the brake hose, thanks for the suggestion Paul

Today I replaced the brake disc, brake pads, and flexi brake hose. I gave the calliper pins a good clean and freshly greased them before reassembly.
I took the car for a drive afterwards and the problem is still there!
I can now only think of the wheel bearing or the cv joint. The boot looks in great condition though.
What's more likely to be the cause, as I think I've eliminated binding brakes as the problem as I've replaced everything to do with brakes on that side!

Yep, pistons move fine. Brakes work fine, no pull to one side either

Is it possible the steering sensor is out or a suspension bush is overly worn?
If the stability control thinks your car is 'drifting/skidding' it'll apply brakes to try to correct it.
Might be why the ABS is kicking in and also fairly constant stability control application of it would explain why one of the discs is all nice and shiny.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

In the meantime try just pressing the DSC button to turn off the stability control and see if that makes a difference.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

If DSC was applying brakes I would expect both sides to be hot and noisy, if just one side being activated then braking would be uneven - pulling to that side?Chris

It’s a good plan to press dsc and drive.
Usually if it’s electrically applying it’s a grunching rubbing noise. As it pulsates
Or unplug the abs unit under the bonnet.
Speedo won’t work and car will be mental I bet

FIXED!!!!
So after replacing the calipers on both sides (the left hand side had split seals), new discs, new pads, and a new front right flexi brake hose I had eliminated brakes being the source of the problem. A neighbour gave me a good pointer that if you can rotate the wheel hub by hand after pressing full and releasing the brakes then the brakes aren't binding.
This left me with either the bearing or the CV joint. I had to film it to share it with you.
So if it sounds like a bearing and the brakes are cooking without pulling to one side, and even if there is no play in the wheel, it probably is the bearing!
