Best settings to reverse trailer up ramp

Hi all

What are the best settings for reversing a 3.5 tonne trailer up a 5 foot long 1 foot high ramp please? In to a raised container.

Usually do low range setting with normal mode and then use high revs and clutch up

Is that wise or should it be high range with dsc off maybe?

Just asking as I want to protect my clutch etc

Australia

Low range and it should almost idle up with minimal revs and little clutch slip.

Thanks again this worked great!

Bit weird feeling just using the clutch to reverse with no revs. But it felt steady and had no problem at all. Very impressive.

Can I ask also please.. what is the best way to drive a trailer: either higher gearing and low revs, or higher revs and lower gear?

Same reason, I want to prolong the cars life and reduce strain

as with any driving...high gear steady revs..dont let it labour...if heavy load on hill...perhaps low range to get it moving and change up if situation permits..disco is a powerful bit of kit if used proper..practice should make perfect

Thanks that’s what I presumed. Lower revs and higher gears and cruise up with motion instead of staying in lower gears getting more power but also working the turbo etc

Getting to grips with my pride and sometimes joy

Australia

Just drive normally but listen and feel your vehicle - because it is towing a heavy load it will start to load up on hills etc earlier so just change down a gear earlier when you feel the load coming on - likewise when going doing downhill - I assume you have brakes on the trailer but as a precaution change down a gear so when going down hill there is less chance of the trailer wanting to push the vehicle.

As I said just drive normally and as the load comes on the car and comes off your change points will happen earlier or later.

Loading of the trailer is most important - here in Australia we aim for about 10% of the weight of the trailer on the tow ball, I know that in the UK you aim for somewhat less but your loads tend to be lighter - but with 3500t weight - our Discos are cleared for 350kg ball weight but I understand that your limits are somewhat less so even more important to make sure your trailer is correctly loaded.
