I have a my15 Disco 4, with 70,000 miles on it, and once again the "engine oil level critically low" has appeared. It happened once before, and the wiring loom was replaced under warranty. It has o ly appeared when towing a horse trailer on the motorway and A roads. I don't drive the outfit hard, 50 tp 55 even on the motorway. It comes; n, and after perhaps 40 miles or if I stop it goes away, but comes back
My question is, is it worth the expense of getting the wiring loom replaced again why dies it not happen when driving solo, it's due it's next service; n November, only done about 10,000 this year. LR 4 se

my understanding is that the oil level is metered by some kind of potentiometer. Giving a certain voltage to reflect the oil level.
I would rather search if there is such kind of sensor which gives the wrong signal. But I am not a mechatronic.
Have you checked if the oil level is critically low at all? I would be scared driving the car unless I could meter the level correctly. Achim

It might be an electronic error but lack of oil in these engines is a major issue. I would be getting the codes read and the issue fully investigated by a good mechanic.
If the oil level is low it will destroy your engine. Uncle Ray's spare wheel protector

There is, I believe, a way to dip the oil via the suction drain. No details because I’ve never done it. Might be worth a search around to see what you can find?
A makeshift dipstick might be a lot cheaper than re wiring the sensor.

I've checked oil level via the stupid dash display, showing max. As it only showed the fault for perhaps 30%of a 450 mile round trip I'm inclined to believe it's a faulty sensor rather than low oil level. I"m just wondering why it only does it when towing, does oil pressure change, even under careful driving. LR 4 se

Just wondering if anyone has managed to resolve this issue? My 2016 car (52k miles) showed this fault when towing a couple of weeks ago, speed 50ish mph, towing a hired wood chipper. Car owned from new and never put any oil in before - reasonably frequent oil checks made. Because of awkwardness in actually checking the level I stopped mid-journey and bought 2 litres of oil after which the message disappeared. Frequent checking over the next couple of days showed level at "max". Since then the message has reappeared 4 times ( when not towing ). I've checked the level daily and it has always shown max. Land Rover assist say not to add any more oil but to visit a dealer and get it drained and measured. I've also had a "service required" message show briefly (service schedule shows due in June). Service booked but not for 4 weeks - I explained the problem to both dealer and LR assist. Extended warranty still in place. No visible oil leaks or blue smoke etc. Any comments/advice welcomed. No engine warning lights at any time but I'm concerned about going in to limp home, or worse, mode involuntarily.

Also, if you have added that 2 litres you spoke of do not drive the car!
Any overfill will be catastrophic to these from my reading. They only hold 5.9 litres total, so yours would have to have been seriously low in order to take 2 litres.
If the gauge reads under the ‘normal’ at halfway it only takes 500ml to cover the scale from bottom to top.
I really wouldn’t be driving it if you’ve added 2 litres!! A mod a week until I have nothing to improve or add.
