Harsh ride - air bags or shocks? valve blocks? |
|
Hi fellows Discoverians,
Sorry for the long post - be warned
I’m closing the 1st year of living with a 2008 TDV6 HSE D3, and am pretty happy with the brute so far.
I’ve changed over many things on it, regular maintenance - full brake overhaul, every rubber bit of the rear suspension, inner lower front suspension bushes, new AMK type compressor.
However recently it seems that the ride has become rather more “jarry” than it used to be. Especially having driven a D3 that was better cared for, mine was noticeably more bouncy over the small sharp creases on the tarmac, that it’s sort of rattly.
Now, the bushes are all original - mostly Lemförder and the hydro ones, no HD, no poly things... so it should be nice, tight and comfortable...
Now... before i go and do “aircraft maintenance” replacing every component possible, i thought to hear your experience and thoughts what can be the reason behind.
1) shocks - becoming overly stiff (although I’d expect them to go all soggy and soft if shot, making ride all boat-like)? Or it would behave different with air bags instead of springs...
2) air bags - rubber parts becoming more solid, less elastic hence being too stiff to react to quick changes beneath the wheels
3) bit of both?
4) valve blocks not opening and releasing excess pressure in the air bags quick or often enough (might sound daft, don’t laugh)...
I spotted no leaks of shock absorbers, the car doesn’t drop much when stationary for a few days (nothing that I’d consider dramatic).
Finally if the solution is to swap the shocks - what to go for? I see Dunlop being best price and people generally satisfied, but also claiming that harsh ride came back after 20k miles... bad quality?
BWI - pricier, but same manufacturer that does Dunlop?
Delphi - super pricey, not sure if they’re worth more than double the price...
Any thoughts, suggestions, questions more than welcome!
Cheers!
Luka

What wheels/tyres are fitted?
I assume it has had an alignment?
Some alignment companies are better than others.

Good point, forgot that important bit: I have new Bridgestone Dueler A/T 001s 255/60R18, which are on the soft side, not going wild with pressures, and very recent alignment...
I doubt it’s the origin, as it used to be more supple with the same setup

When all bushes were done, you did measure the height and adjust before tighten bolts up. If its "jarry" it maybe hitting bump stops so need to check the height sensors for correct settings.

I guess they did it right at the service, however i did do plenty calibrations using iid tool, no sign of sitting on bump stops, not even near.. - calibrated to standard height each time...

Worn shocks can cause a harsh ride and some owners have reported on here regained smoothness after renewing. That's not to say its definitely the case for yours but it is possible.
According to the AF website BWI are the original equipment provider to JLR, made in the UK, they purchased the Delphi operation.
Whats your mileage and is there anything in the service history to suggest they've been changed before or are original?
