Just nothing

2010 D4
Got in this morning. Doors unlocked as usual. Land Rover pic and mileage on dash as usual. Foot on brake, press start, and nothing happened. No lights, no key not found warning, just nothing. Radio still turned on when pressed. Doors locked and unlocked as normal. Tried several times but still no joy. Ignition wouldn't turn on with or without brake pedal pressed. So locked it and let it go into sleep mode. Couple of minutes later I got back in and it started as usual. Could it be a low battery issue, as I think mine might be getting tired. It's been sluggish to start a couple of times recently, but fine since ctek charge a few weeks ago.
Or could it just be a gremlin who won't reappear?

Did you ever find an answer to this? Mine is randomly doing the same,. It's done it twice coming off the boat at Dover embarrassingly! This morning at a local business, as you say no amount of fiddling, rubbing battery or anything would start it. Walked back into shop, came back out and then it started... If had a new battery back in December...

Cheers

LTB00404 for 2010MY> referred to the diagnosis guide as

Quote:
Situation:
This bulletin is for information only to aid in diagnosing issues when the engine fails to crank/start after the start button is pressed.

Should a customer express concern, follow the Non-Start Assistance Guide (see TOPIx, Workshop Manual, Starting System – Vehicles with Smart Key - section 303-06).

Quote:
Symptom
The engine does not crank (starter motor does not turn)

Possible Causes
Gear selector not in P or N position (vehicles with automatic transmission)
Battery
Starter relay
Invalid key code received by central junction box
Brake pedal switch failure
Harness/connectors
Starter motor
Ignition switch
Generator
Transmission control module
Engine control module
Engine seized

Action
Make sure the gear selector is in the P or N position and correctly adjusted. Check the battery condition and state of charge. Check for DTCs indicating an immobilizer or brake pedal switch failure. Check the starter motor relay, ignition switch and generator circuits. Refer to the electrical guides. Check for TCM and ECM DTCs. Check that the engine turns freely

Thanks, but car is fine now. Just put my OBDII checker on it - no error codes found. In answer to the checklist, I've put my answers below ..

Possible Causes
Gear selector not in P or N position (vehicles with automatic transmission) - NO WAS IN PARK, COULDN'T MOVE IT.
Battery - FANCY BOSCH ONE CHANGED IN DECEMBER
Starter relay ??? IT STARTED AFTERWARDS
Invalid key code received by central junction box - AS ABOVE
Brake pedal switch failure - AS ABOVE
Harness/connectors - AS ABOVE
Starter motor - AS ABOVE
Ignition switch - ???
Generator - ??
Transmission control module ??
Engine control module ??
Engine seized - NOPE!

I've changed the fob batteries, but I suspect this is going to be one of the weird ones again. I wonder if it could be immobilizer related ..?

I had something similar in mine about a month or so ago and it was to do with low/no pressure in the brake servo.

Basically you needed to press incredibly hard on the brake pedal for the car to recognise this and start, even though it wasn't giving me a warning about the pedal not being pressed.

That's interesting about the brake pedal, but if that was the cause then I should have been able to have turned the dash on without starting the engine .... I tried taking my foot off the pedal altogether to see if I could get the dash lights on i.e. to get into the menu's etc - but this would not work either ...?

I guess my problem was slightly different then as everything worked for me right up until I pressed the start button then everything went off.

Thanks Andy, maybe it is different ...? I could turn the radio on OK but that was about it.

You're welcome.

With the ignition on in mine everything was working fine, but once I put my foot on the brake pedal and pressed the starter everything went off.

It was only when the AA man buried the brake pedal into the floor it started as perfectly.

Hasn't happened again to mine .......yet. So can't throw any further light on the issue. Except it sounds very similar if you go no ignition lights etc.

Good point Robbie... I don't know?! My reader cable I hook up to my laptop, usually it says the code, then I often have to search for its meaning on the Internet...

Had this happen to my D4, turned out to the brake pedal switch.

Thanks, but different to mine. The display would not come on either (which happens if the brake pedal is not pressed).

I think it was either a fob battery on its way out or interference. It's funny this has happened twice on a P&O boat both in Calais too. I wonder if I should drive back to the fencing shop it failed at the other day & see if I can recreate the fault..

Perhaps it might be interference then, I'm sure there was something about people being unable to unlock their cars (I know not quite the same issue) on Watchdog a few years ago.

As for the battery in the key, the dashboard display told me when mine was low.
