How much should a Pilkington windscreen cost?
I took my car to a proper garage today (for the first time in 5 years!) One of the jobs is to replace windscreen because of a crack. The guy looked up basic basic Pilkington glass screens in his computer and thy were EUR450 plus VAT. I said “but they are €160 delivered from eBay”
And i missing something? Can you fake windscreens? Do Pilkington do a version of the screen that is 1 atom thick?

Your ebay link is not a pilkington...
Clearly stated in their advert..
Artikelhersteller: Automotive Guardian (Europa)
But you can not compare ebay takeaway prices with workshop prices...
If you buy on ebay it is your risk, and if it comes broken in/delivered, or is otherwise not ok, you have to do the handling.. waiting for your money, (and believe me, a customer is much more protected by law than a company... )
But if a customer buys in a workshop, the workshop have to do the service if not ok..take a risk if you really turn up.. and payment for returns, waiting time (so order twice and must hope they get their money back), they have to make money/profit..
Seems rather clear to me...
If you want a cheapy and do not need heated it is maybe good alternative. Why not?
But heated, ALWAYS Pilkington..Best regards
Harold

Cheap windscreens are generally cheap for a reason!
I have 8-10 a year fitted at work, we've tried all sorts of combinations but cheap ones don't last

ISTR in the early days of the D3 I was quoted £1200 for a fitted replacement heated screen I am talking 15 year’s ago.It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I posted the wrong link 🙈
Sorry I was doing it on a phone on a train just arriving at my stop. This is the right one which does state it is Pilkington.
Do windscreens often arrive broken? What if I message the guy and ask him if he packages it well?
As for heating is that an option? I have a bog standard base model car

I can't speak for CH but having spoken to the guy who fitted my windscreen a couple of years ago he said that screens themselves aren't terribly expensive (a few hundred quid). He wanted to set up his own business installing screens but the big firms have quite a monopoly on supply and the links to the big insurers. He said he could undercut them job for job by hundreds. It says : Hersteller : Pilkington guardian
So what do you get? Pilkington OR guardian?
As far s i know the brands are not the same...
And will you fit it yourself?
Not all workshops are accepting /willing to fit products bought elsewhere..Best regards

Unfortunately for me it was this year I opted for 3rd party insurance instead of fully comp and I discovered I have a CHF 1000 glass excess. So insurance won’t cover it.
I’m getting this work done in Germany just over the border (which I can actually travel to even with the current restrictions). There is a reason you don’t see old cars in Switzerland...
But weird on the brand. I naively thought Guardian must be a Pilkington model. I will ask the seller to confirm
to give them their due, the Guardian screens appear to be available in every combination of features a D3/4 might have ... so perhaps they know their stuff ?
With a Chinese copy, they sell in the sure knowledge the customer is too far away to make it sensible to send a dud back.
Maybe German sourced ones are good ? Looks like you, mek, are going to be our guinea-pig for this ?

Like many on this forum, in all aspects of maintenance as rule I fit Land Rover equivalent or better parts. Tinker bearings, GKN shafts, Merle HD arms etc. But I now have a car fundamentally worth little. And the garage is about to repaint the roof after the lacquer fell off.... So the bill will be material. Making it less is a good thing.
However glass does go through temperature extremes seasonally in Switzerland. I’ll have to think about this. I have messaged that eBay seller, realistically I bet he says it is not Pilkington, the implication being that he has spoofed the eBay filtering/spammed the search. Maybe that would be grounds for a free screen...
