Flywheel - should it be doweled to the crank?

Just dropped the flywheel off the engine (it's out of the car). Next mission is timing belt, oil pump etc.

Looking at the flywheel and crank I was expecting a dowel to 'time' the flywheel to the crank so that the flywheel locking pin hole position is at a set angle to the crank angle. There is a hole in the crank that I think is for a dowel and a corresponding one on the flywheel, but no dowel?

Is it missing? I have a LUK branded flywheel which makes me thing it has been changed in the past - I assume the original flywheel would not be LUK branded.

D3 - 08 plate, 2.7 Manual.

Thanks,

Adrian

Hmmm........., the thing is Adrian there are two holes in the DMF, but only one is intended for the TDV6 TDC locking point!!

There is no dowel, and the obligation is on the installer to mark the crank in relation to the DMF timing port before removal. My memory is not so good these days even though I have done maybe 10 or more of these damn things. Rolling Eyes However, if I recall correctly of the two holes in the DMF one is "T" shaped and the other is "oval". I think the "oval" is correct hole for the timing locking pin, but I am open to correction on this.

IIRC LUK were the OEM for that clutch, but again I'm open to correction. Rolling Eyes

The holes in the crank are spaced so the the flywheel will only fit in one position. No dowel needed

Yes that's correct, there is one slightly offset hole so it will only bolt up one way.

Couldn't for the life of me remember that this morning at 4.30. These Friday night tipples will have to stop Laughing

The dowel hole is used for fitting the crankshaft trigger ring only
