Adding cameras
Hello
I'm new to the forum, though have been reading posts on here since early 2019 when I purchased my first Land Rover - a 2016 Discovery 4 HSE Luxury in Corris Grey with 29K miles. It's been a great couple of years of ownership (I think its going to be a keeper!) and i've found this to be a really useful forum.
I'm steadily improving the car, adding the remote for the FBH, treated the chassis with dinitrol, sorting the sunblinds which wouldn't hold in place etc.
The car didn't have the surround camera fitted as a factory option. I'd like to add the front cameras (to the front bumper) - is it possible to do this and get them to work, or will the car be missing some software and also be missing the necessary wiring? I couldn't see where this question has been asked previously, though if it has then I'd be pleased to be signposted.
Look forward to your advice on this.
Kind regards, Peter

I have them. I REALLY would not bother. I don't know if you can, but IF you can and it takes more than 30 mins to do at a cost of less than 30 quid, you're setting yourself up for huge disappointment. PAGODA

I have them also and would echo the don't bother.
They truly are poor. So much so, I thought mine were faulty so got another module and tested with a new coax to the head unit. Same.
WRT wiring, first obvious place to look is under the passenger seat as this where the module is that combines the images and down scales them to crapolavision. Might be lucky.

The quality of cameras used on the D4 seems to have improved greatly as their deployment on the actual vehicle has been scaled back. I too have them on my now 2014 D4 and the quality is woeful. That is especially so given my previous (lease) D4 was a newer MY16 and the camera (reverse camera) quality was excellent. Night and day different in a positive way.
So if you do retro fit make sure you acquire the latest cameras and modules..Jim

The single rear view camera was excellent. The issue is the surround set-up. I will echo what others have said (and it’s nothing to do with the age of the camera/modules etc), on our 2016 Landmark, the surround cameras are woefully bad (including the rear view one - I too had it looked at several times), but a friend had a 2015 Graphite with only the rear view camera which was crystal clear.

My D4 was one of the last 2000 built (apparently, according to that other post with the VINs). Surround cameras are still crap.PAGODA

It's because the box under the seat does the multiplexing and is poor and introduces crapness. Good signal quality in from the camera -> bad quality out.
Disconnecting the 4 other cameras doesn't make the reversing cam any better if I recal.
There should have been an * in the brochure about the Surround Cameras - *will degrade reversing camera if option is chosen. In today's world, if you contribute something, you don't contribute enough. If you contribute nothing, you receive everything.

It’s a pity because the concept is good. ISTR that the earlier ones were much better? More “progress” from LR (ow’t to save a bob or two!).

Yes, early ones were great I am told. My brother in law thought mine were broken as he had them on his 2009 and were far better.
It's not like they were in the base price so why skimp on a paid for option!?In today's world, if you contribute something, you don't contribute enough. If you contribute nothing, you receive everything.

My 2010 is nothing to shout about. I wouldn’t bother with any of them.

My 2010 has them but one has failed at the front and I won't bother to get it fixed.
The rear view is good for parking and reversing which I use every time I am in the car and for offload use the side view shows the wheels quite well so might be worth it for that.
I can't tell you if the 2010 was a better resolution than later models but if they are then I would say it not worth getting the side and front cameras.Faultmate MSV-2

1. There’s no wiring in the car, the loom is specific to surround camera fitted vehicles.
2. It’s very expensive even if you can find a salvage vehicle to rob the bits.
3. It will take at least one day to install, maybe 2 if you’ve never removed your interior.
4. The CCF edit appears to have disappeared from the IID tool.
5. As said, it’s not the best but it’s no different to BMW, VW, Audi or Volvo as the boxes and cameras are the same, from the same manufacturer and era (although the technology was old when it was first introduced on the 2013 FFRR.
6. The reverse cam only option is analogue, the surround cameras (inc reverse/rear) are digital believe it or not.
7. Don’t bother, I wished I hadn’t.012MY RRS 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography (Current)

I fitted a front view camera on my old D3 through a GVIF, simply by pressing a button I could view anything hidden below the bonnet line, it was brilliant I really miss it on the D4.It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
