Smart key not found, TPMS and stop/start not working |
|
Hi
Stop/start stopped working on my MY16 Disco a while back. Not a big issue, but may be relevant.
In the last few weeks, I've been getting the message "Smart key not found" when getting in the car. Car won't start (unless I put the key to the underneath of the steering column) and won't lock and unlock the doors. I have replaced the batteries in both smart keys but no success.
Also found that the TPMS isn't registering a value from any wheel.
Makes me wonder if the smart key and TPMS systems use the same wireless receiver in the car, or are on the same circuit/fuse. Also wonder if the lack of miles isn't helping, with lockdown we are only doing short distances so maybe the main battery is on the edge. Car does crank ok though if I press the key to the underneath of the steering column.
Any assistance and ideas gratefully received.

I would start by charging the main battery. It may even need changing but start with a charge.
If you only do small mileage and infrequently you might want to get CTEK battery charger you can leave connected (if you have power where you park?). If you have towbar electrics under the flap in the rear bumper you can get an adaptor to charge through the tow electrics (see the rolling link at the top of the page..).

Thanks. I have the car on a non-CTEK 1.5A charger at the moment, that'll take a little while to put some energy in the battery, will see if that makes a difference. Could a low battery cause TPMS and smart key issues, but still allow the engine to crank? MY16 D4 Graphite in Loire Blue

From what I understand a low battery charge can cause all sorts of spurious warnings. The fact that stop/start has ceased to work is an indication the battery needs a recharge as a minimum and may need replacing /replacing soon. Has the main battery ever been replaced?

The main and auxiliary batteries are the originals. Car is 4 1/2 years old, so perhaps a replacement is due. I'll leave the car charging for a while and see if that resolves the issues. MY16 D4 Graphite in Loire Blue

I had similar problems with my MY2016 Landmark, resolved by changing both batteries.
I have also fitted a second engine to body earth strap since many MY2016 owners have suffered the broken earth strap problem. Gone 2016 Landmark D4

I’m currently charging the main battery at a very gentle 1A. How do I charge the second battery - in fact, where is the second battery? Bit embarrassed that I don’t actually know that MY16 D4 Graphite in Loire Blue

The second (start/stop) battery is on the drivers side in the plastic box up near the windscreen. Its just the opposite side but same position as main battery. You can charge it in the same way you charge the main battery.
Don't forget, if the battery is in the car, connect the negative lead to an earth in the car rather than the negative terminal (that goes for the main battery too).
Good luck, keep us updated.
Cheers Gary

Many thanks. This forum and its members are amazing!
At 1A, it may be a few days before I can confirm one way or another. MY16 D4 Graphite in Loire Blue

Yeah, I messed about trying to charge the batteries for a few weeks before 'Biting The Bullet'.
Here is what I purchased at the end of the day.
Main Battery - https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/exide/ek950/
Start/Stop Battery - https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/aux/ek151/
You will have lots of dubious fault codes stored so when removing the old main battery, let it stand a couple of hours before fitting the new one as this will 'Reset' your system to clear the fault codes. Gone 2016 Landmark D4

I thought it might be worth sharing my logic regarding batteries (and tyres) replacement to see if it helps your thought process.
It’s Winter, if your battery isn’t in good shape and you’re not doing any long runs , this is the period when you will find out ( car not starting, spurious errors, fuel burning heating not working for car preheats etc.) Let’s say a new battery costs £200 fitted and lasts you 4 years (it may well last a bit more, as your current battery has done, and if you fit it yourself it may well be cheaper). The cost of the battery over time is £50 a year. That is £12.50 per quarter year. So assuming you have replaced the battery 3-6 months earlier than complete failure (which given the age and potential condition of your battery, is likely to be the most time your current battery will last) will cost you £12.50-£25 you could have saved using these costs.
£12.50 for a new battery through the Winter period doesn’t seem like a big cost risk compared to the potential downside.
As I said, I use the same logic when replacing tyres. If I do it a little early this time of year, the actual cost for the difference over time is small.
I hope you managed to follow my logic. Good luck
Cheers Gary

Got fed up with my 1A charger so have bought a CTEK 5A.
Took the car for a drive just now and after a while I got a message saying my front right tyre is down to 31PSI. This is good as it shows the TPMS has come back to life. Still no sign of the smart key working.
I’m also picking up a new main battery from Halfords later this week. Even if it isn’t the cause of my issues, it is a preventative step given its age. MY16 D4 Graphite in Loire Blue

Hi peteyd
Sounds like a step forward. The CTEK will be a good investment. if you have a tow electrics socket, you can buy an adapter to plug it directly into it, which may be more convenient. I thought I'd share a few thoughts:
1. Have you tried replacing the battery in your smart key/s? A simpole and cheap step if not. If you have replaced then did you do so with good quality replacements (ie not of dubious e-bay quality). The procedure for doing this is in the handbook and pretty simple.
2. There have been reports of a phone cradle causing this issue (wireless charging one I believe). Do you have such a thing or has one been installed recently?
3. If you search for "Smart key not found" on the forum you will find a few previous items on this topic, which suggest the things I mention above, plus some other, less simple fixes (replacing the module for instance).
Don't forget to do a Battery management reset (BMS) as part of your battery swap procedure. If you don't have the tool for this, Halfords can do so (part of their fitting procedure), but will obviously charge to fit it.
Good luck
Cheers
Gary Gary
