WD40 is useless as a rust preventer.
Put some underbody wax, Waxoyl/Dinitrol/Wurth or similar on it till you can fix it properly.Richard

WD40 is useless for most things inasmuch as there are many better products out there for specific uses.
Before adding any cavity waxes such as Dinitrol, you need to treat the rust that's present. So clean it up, apply a rust inhibitor such as Hydrate 80, then add a decent primer and then spray it with a rust inhibiting paint. Then apply a cavity wax. I've used 3M cavity wax plus lately and found it very good. Equally good, I think (though thicker) is the Bilt Hamber product.PAGODA
