I've got them on my D4 and on a couple of occasions on the autobahn they've proved to be life savers in snowy/freezing rain. Winter tyres need to have a minimum of 4mm tread depth (legal requirement in Germany and Austria) but also start to lose efficiency when 4/5 years old so check the age as much as remaining tread.

I've run winter and 'summer' tyres on my LR3s and 4s and hands down in the winter tyres are worth it. I got them originally due to the fact that they are mandated in Germany where I had several postings, so had no choice. I've also lived only in the SE of the UK where the temperatures didn't really get as low, but in the winter were below the 7 degree threshold where proper winter tyres start to outperform summer tyres (and as the temperature falls, so that 'out-performance' delta increases). There's no question whatsoever that winter tyres brake better and have better traction below 7 degrees (some great videos done by (I think) whatcar or autocar that demonstrate the significantly improved braking distances). The question is whether the temps where you are make it worth it. A mild winter in the SE UK can see temps stay above 7 degrees quite often and above 7 degrees the normal tyre will outperform the winter tyre. It's a difficult choice in the south of the UK.
I'm current in the E United States where winters can be quite harsh and am thinking of getting a set this year if I can stretch to it. I've run new Pirelli ATRs here all year round and my front wheel drive GTI with winter tyres had significantly better grip on fresh snow than the LR3 running the new ATRs. Absolutely night and day in comparison.
To your point on wear, look carefully at the minimum tread requirements on the brand you're looking at. Winter tyre performance starts to fall off when the tread is worn much like any other tyre.PAGODA

5mm is prob not far off change depth, not worth buying something so low. We changed the Conti winters on SWMBO’s car as they started to not be as good on ice.

OK, can't help there with that size.
I seem to recall that 4mm is a safe minimum, much less and they don't work as they should, similar to 2mm on a 'normal' summer tyre.

RRS size, you’d need to check the load rating.

Yes, too low. Meant for a much lighter car. D3 needs 111 ISTR, D4 a bit lower.

Over read, I think. diameter is less. So 1 turn of roadwheel takes you less far than car thinks it did..
