Oil cooler or more serious?
Its been a good few months since my disco (TDV6 2.7) started having trouble.
It started with a pinhole leak in the cooling system, which my mechanic fixed.
When I got it back it was fine for 5 minutes but when it heat up it would suddenly blow all the coolant out of the plastic expansion tank!
My mechanical suspected it was a blown head but I was skeptical as there was no steam out the exhaust and took time to happen.
Now there is oil (this wasn't the case initially) inside the plastic expansion tank.
There is no emulation when I dip the oil.
I set it to my local indi, he suspects that it could be the oil cooler and has suggested changing both it and the radiator, but there is no guarantee and it could be money down the drain.
Could he be right, has anyone seen this oil cooler fault before?

Happens a fair bit on modern cars as the oil cooler leaks internally.
Change oil cooler and run run engine with washing up detergent added to the water ( I have used Surf before but I tho k you can now buy a specific cleaner for this). May need 2 or 3 flushes but has worked for me without need to change radiator.

The oil/water cooler is in the middle of the engine on these.

Could an oil cooler leak be enough to force coolant out?

Had the oil cooler fail on my Freel2.
It regularly threw the coolant out of the expansion vessel, while I was trying to work out what the problem was. Oil in the water being the obvious sign.MY07 Freelander2 SE Santorini Black - Gone

It could also just be the gasket between oil cooler and block. Check it before purchasing a new cooler

Would an exhaust gas detection help determine if the pressure comes from the oil cooler?

Does anyone have any info or tips on removing the oil cooler I can't seem to find anything anywhere. I have oil in my expansion tank and the garage thinks it's the cooler.

Drain the cooling system and disconnect the battery earth. Remove the water outlet and hoses at the front of the engine. Remove the oil cooler bolts (I think there's about 8 or 10 of them) and remove the oil cooler.
Replace the 0 ring seal and gasket with new, reassembly is reverse of removal but replace too the 0 ring seals on the water outlet as well. Can't remember if the L/H knock sensor has to come out but I think it probably does. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

I just remembered, the crankcase breather has to come out as well. It's a bit of a pig to prise out!
Wash it out with kerosene or similar and then hot soapy water, then allow to dry thoroughly before refitting.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ
