I've noticed for some time now that when cornering to the right in my D3 (especially on roundabouts) that the steering goes very light mid way through the turn in. It is really disconcerting as it feels as though the car has lost grip, (same sensation as hitting ice etc) but the grip is fine. I thought I was imagining it at first but the other day it was so bad I pulled in and jacked the car up to check that all the wheel bolts etc were tight.
Anyone experienced this or know what it could possibly be? It is not tyre/wheel related as it is the same with the MTR's or Pirellis on. 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Had something that sounded similar on my D2. Tried for ages to solve it and a couple of trips to the dealer didn't find anything. In the end it was very slight vertical travel on the track rod ends. When I went over a bump, sometimes it could almost feel like wheel had come away from the rack - very weird. New track rod ends solved it immediately. Could be that? 2020 SDV6 D5 HSE, Carpathian Grey +

Looks like the first trip to the dealers then for MV57
It's done less then 9000 miles so not expecting Track Rod failure, mind you it is getting a lot of off road hammer so it might be having an effect. 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

CFB, I get a similar 'dead' feeling if I swap tyres around. I have to make sure that when I put my Scorps back on after off-road tyres have been used, that I put the same tyre back on the same wheel.

Does it improve as the tyres 'bed-in'?
If so I'll leave it for a while and see. I do label the wheels as I swap them on/off mainly due to the different pressures for front and rear. 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

I don't know, I have not had either set of tyres on long enough to tell.

Hi I am experiencing exactly the same problem as described by CFB, steering going light as you turn into a bend etc a long way before it should, makes the front end feel nervous. Also get it when braking very lightly and there is a change in road surface. It has been hapening for a month or so and getting slightly worse. Thought the dealer might find something as it had its first service 2 days ago but unsuprisingly the only thing they said was there was 5mm tread left all round! I thought the tyres are supposed to be swapped round at first service? If the steering is rocked with the engine off there is a distinct knock from the OS end of the rack and if the track rod is held there is definate play on the end of the rack. Is there any history of premature rack wear? Car now at 13000miles. Any ideas?
