MOT Advisories

I managed to get my car squeezed in for an MOT (friend of a friend) as it’s coming over to Norway for a road trip at the end of the month, not sure when it’ll be back in the UK.

It passed but had these advisories.

* I see the image is terrible...

-Brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened. Nearside front
-Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement nearside Front (rear)
-Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement offside Front (rear)

Is it just a case of replacing the bushes or should it be more whilst they’re being done? Discs I guess are a bit easier. How likely is this to be a big deal in the coming 4K miles,
if I can’t get it done before I leave? Last thing I want to do is breakdown.... or pay Norwegian prices!

My regular go to mechanic isn’t available for 3 weeks and I’m in Norway (and not very handy anyways). Anyone know of anyone near Edinburgh who is reliable and does collect and drop off? Obviously I’ll pay for that but little choice just now.

Car is getting the wheels powder coated on Monday and valeted Wednesday morning. I’m flying back on Thursday and taking the ferry from Newcastle on Monday the 3rd. Nightmare!

Thanks DSL, apologies for that. Was certain it would be a good enough resolution.

No worries. It just needs the NORMAL_ bit trimmed off the code. Bit of a crusade of mine once I realised why perfectly good pics of mine came out low res, system defaults to low res. Thumbs Up

I wouldn't be too concerned about the lower arm bushes over the next 4K unless they are already knocking over the bumps, then I'd be inclined to do them now just because i wouldn't want to put up with it whilst on a road trip.

The bushes being worn wouldn’t really be an issue for me, personally.

But I’d be inclined to get the brake discs/pads done before venturing abroad.. any garage should be competent to do a basic disc/pad change.

Thanks guys!

No knocking as far as I know. If I do find someone is it a case of just changing over the bushes or is it a hole arm and fixings?

If the arms are in good condition - you can do just the bushes/polybush them - but usually it’s easier to just replace the complete arm with an OE replacement.

I'd check the nearside disc isn't looking bad because of a caliper in the early days of seizing.
Discs not looking very similar on the same axle is a warning of something amiss in my book.
Could be a slider pin getting a bit stiff, in which case remove it, give it a clean and put a light coating of ceramic grease on it or the caliper piston getting stiff - look under dust boot for corrosion and as above, although with red rubber brake grease if that's your preference.
The only time I see discs working properly that have a marked difference left-to-right is when you're next to the sea and always park the same orientation to it.

As for the suspension arm bush, if it's a tester unused to Disco3/4 arms they can be surprised by the amount of movement even a new bush has and put an advisory, but might be an idea to start spraying penertrating oil on the bolts now! Wink

Thanks folks appreciated. I've bought discs and the arms/fitting kit. Doesn't seem I can get anyone in the Edinburgh area as it stands so I'll bring it all over to Norway and have it done here.

If the whole arm is getting done I guess the time might be less than if they were trying to keep parts, at least they don't need to mess around if the bolts are rusted solid...

Have you tried Andy White in Edinburgh to do the necessary work?

Thanks for the recommendation. I haven't tried him but may try and make contact today.... but time is super tight now. I think my dad is just going to do the brakes (he's a mechanic to trade but retired years ago) and I'll save the rest for coming back... unless there's any chance it can be booked in.

If he's good then I can book the car in there autumn or winter....
