rear prop shaft centre bearing |
|
Hi all
Does anyone have experience of replacing a rear prop shaft centre bearing?
Had my 2015 motor in for its last service package service and MOT today, advisories where prop shaft joint worn(but not excessively) £728 to replace + both rear tyres nearing legal limit goodyear wranglers 19" at £217 each have already found them for £145 each fitted without much effort.
I've seen some centre bearings on the market for £25/£30
Any information appreciated
Thanks

Only replace the whole propshaft with a GKN part, if you just replace the bearing to get it through an MoT you'll pay again within 2 years to replace it with another one.
The only company that will replace it properly is GKN who make the propshafts.
You've got to take the propshaft off to replace it anyway and it's quicker just to put a new one back on. You can even do it yourself on the driveway but make sure the vehicle is chocked up. 1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

I bought a GKN one and a set of bolts from Rimmers and swapped mine in the drive in around 1 hour for around 1/3 of what you have been quoted (need some decent sockets axle stands or a pair of ramps and a torque wrench) there are lots of people who have used Sikaflex to repair the centre rubber bearing on the shaft but tbh I would just change it as you replace all the joints then in one hit. Even if you pay an Indi to do the job you will save a fortune Must stop buying shiny toys....

Part is around £250 and it will take a good independent an hour to fit. Just had mine done under warranty (WD). Was quoted £650 from LR dealer.
All the research points to doing the whole thing and using GKN.
Cheers Gary

Do it yourself, took us around 45 minutes on the drive. Just ensure vehicle is chocked. MY2023 Discovery 5 R-Dynamic 3.0

If it is the rubber part that has failed as oppossed to the bearing itself, you can of course carry out a time honoured bodge for a tenner.
Youtube repair bushes with pu sealant and see what comes up.

Hi Guys
Thanks for your input, think a new GKN shaft is the way to go,I have an independent garage nearby who works mostly with defenders and earlier disco's so think he will get the job. At 68 I'm past rolling around under motors (but have done plenty of it in the past). The fault is an advisory so no rush to get it done will let you know outcome
Thanks
