Is that a bolt or a ball joint?“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

It's a bolt. It presses the tie-rod against the hub-assembly. The rod has a protrusion that goes into the hub. All the bolt has to do is keep it all pressed together, the stresses are handled by the rod/hub connection.
My bolt snapped off-road (in a simple dirt road). The real problem is that the bolt snapped flush with the hub. So there was not way to get it out to replace. The thing has red thread locker... It was a PAIN!
My friends and I are pretty sure that the problem is that the bolt was not tightened all the way in. This would make the bolt take stress in such a way that over time the steel would fatigue and break.
My mechanic tells me that this is a bolt that sometimes gets removed during the alignment process. He told me some dealers don't re-use it, and the new one has new thread locker...
As far as me getting back on the road.... Here is a pic of what we had to do:
I had 3 wheel steering! Actually some of my crazy friends want to change the rod with hydraulic something-or-other, to actually have 4ws! (albeit not much in the rear). I will not let them get their hands on the D3!

I posted a topic months ago what this part was called. Reason being i had 4 wheel allignment done by stealer. Couple months later it was back in because they didn't get it right. It was to do with front wheels but they said rear tow arms need replacing as well. Hmm this as got me thinking because in less than 500 miles their telling me they worn Now me thinks they cocked up and didn't replace the bolts when they did 4 wheel allignment
EDIT=

I think it's ok to re-use the bolt. Is problably more of an issue of the blue-lock-glue thing.
If you look at the diagram, there is no real reason for them to remove the bolt on the side of the hub, but hey who knows.
There are bushings and rubber boots on this arm, and I guess they can wear down. What's your milege?
Where did you get the nice 3d color diagram?-------------------

This happened to me this weekend. The bolt broke in half right where it leaves the knuckle in the wheel assembly. $8 part, $180 in labor to drill the old one out and install a new one.

We did a repair on the trail with cinch straps, drove a mile or so off the trail with no problems. We applied forward tension to hold the bar into its nested position and kept tightening the straps every so often.
