high-pitched rumble sound coming from the back... |
|
Over the last 200 mls or so (28k covered altogether), there is a noticable rumbling noise coming from the back of the car that starts to appear at sppeds over 60ish. It could best be described as a wind-rushing noise (but lower pitched than a whistle), & something that you would expect to result from a recent add-on such as, say, cross bars or a roofbox... but I haven't added anything! It becomes more noticable/louder as speed increases.
Could it be the rear transfer box/drive shafts?
Any ideas? DGRR

Nope - they're brand new, & Pirellis. I actually thought that worn tyres might have been the problem and I put brand new Pirelli Scorpions on last week (the old set having lasted for 28k mls - quite happy with that!), but it has made no difference... noise still present. DGRR

Possible wheel bearing, or binding brake. Does one of the wheels feel hotter than the other after a run? is there excessive brake dust on one wheel?
If neither of the above, it might be a good idea to jack up each rear wheel and give a wobble and a spin to check for wheel bearing noise or movement.
Other possibilities, are all your windows shut properly?, is the tailgate closing properly?

Thanks Gareth - will check out all these possibilities tomorrow. Thinking about it, the upper part of the tailgate does need a bit of a slam to close properly these days... let's see DGRR
