We (like many on here) have two cars. Not so much "his" and "hers" but because they serve two different purposes. An EV for local journeys and the shopping trolley, the other is the trailer and the tin tent tug and for longer journeys.
The latter (the D4) was a continuation of our Motorhome and that insurance line has never had any claim on it, the other one has had a claim on it afew years ago.
When you seek a renewal the form asks have you had "any" claim against you which in the way it is asked applies whichever policy is being renewed which then contradicts the entitlement to no claims. As it says ANY, failing to declare automatically voids the insurance.
Not withstanding protected NCB how do you square 6 years NCB when you have had a claim 2 years ago for example? When I tried to get a quote for insurance with the AA it was declined so I rang the office the following day and their system basically assumed I was lying when I wanted NCB despite the claim. Even the guy on the phone couldn't untangle it as the refusal was now on file. A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.

Interesting questions there! In my experience, they always ask "have you ever had insurance declined?" and I always answer "no". But... When I tried to change from FL2 to D3, my (then) insurer wouldn't cover the D3 because of modifications, so I moved insurers. Does that mean I had insurance declined? Should that be declared? Previously:

I think the question is for "you" as an individual, not a car that you want to insure.
Excessive claims, convictions, driving offences could class a person as uninsurable. A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.

Why is NCB car specific?
Also, why should my daughter's NCB be removed when notifying the insurer of a potential fraudulent claim that might be coming in? New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

NCB should not be vehicle specific - I prevously advised the ABI (Assoc of British Insurers) and my son worked for NFU mutual in the cer insurance dept - and we are both of the view that the driver who holds the policy has the NCB.
In most cases (at least back then) you could retain the NCB for up to two years even if you were without a vehicle at that time. Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

The problem comes when running two seperate policies.
Whet I started the second policy I had 7 years NCB earned on the 1st, I couldn't apply the earned NCB on the new policy. A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.

The NCB usually relates to a policy held by an individual - you build up the NCB on each policy. It should be possible to transfer the policy (and its NCB) to the 'higher risk' vehicle, but you cannot have a NCB on one policy and then apply it to two if you buy another vehicle.
I'm not sure if I am helping here, but am trying!
We used to have separate policies for each vehicle when we had just the one each, then had a multi-car policy when we had three vehicles (bought a cheap runaround) - the third vehicle had no NCB despite the other two both having max NCB.
We were nervous about losing the NCB for both policies (in the case of a claim) when we got rid of the 3rd car but now have a combined policy with two separate NCBs, ie effectively back where we were originally, but with a modest discount to encourage us to keep both vehicles/policies with the same underwriter. Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

I have three cars, two have separate policies so separate NCB and the other is a multi car. The NCB for each policy is: 3 years, 5 years and over 10 years but at the end of the day it's still me driving.
It all sees a bit daft. If I buy another car and they ask what NCB do I have which one will I pick... New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

NCB applies to the driver and so should apply to all their policies. It's another insurance industry con job, sadly, that requires the driver to get NCB for each car. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Insurers refer to the CUE database to confirm the claims (or not) you tell them about when you first take out insurance with them. I believe that is the central reference for all insurers who share details of any claims on it. Gary

As someone who has 5 vehicles, the NCB is driver and policy. So I have 14years on one car, 8 years on the other, 1 year on one motorbike, 0 years on another motorbike. One policy has expired now, as I used to insure 3 cars.
Having recently moved my 1 year's NCB over to the new bike (which has a much higher premium), the insurance asked for the policy number that gained the 1 years NCB.
Bike is only low due to the 2yr lapse rule in insurance periods

A lot of problems can be due to online procedures as many human experienced brokers have left the "High Street". Independent Brokers. They are out there and often very helpful. Things like mirror bonus policies were a thing as you can only drive one vehicle at a time? I used to work in the industry but left in 2011. I think A Plan who used to be a sponsor on here? got bought out by Howdens?(not the kitchen makers!) They have a High Street presence? The company I worked for was bought by them.
