Lifted Coil Springs Cause Shock Failure ???

Hi everyone,
I have a 2007 TDV6 S with coil springs which I am in the process of upgrading.
I have read with interest the posts on this topic, however I have a new question which I dont believe has been addressed on this forum.

I was in at a suspension specialist place yesterday looking for a lifted coil solution and was told that unless I replace the shocks as well the coils, then the standard shocks would top out & prematurely fail due to them being too short in length.

The proposed solution is the 30mm lift King Springs with Bilstein shocks front & rear. The clip position for the spring on the shocks would be adjusted (I assumes this just gives more preload) so would end up with around a 40mm lift. Around 40-45mm is my target as I dont want to deteriorate my ride quality with very heavy springs (I have made this mistake on my last 4WD).

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on this subject ?
Was this identified as a potential issue by any of the suspension places that have done work on coilers so far ?
Has anyone with a lifted coiler had any issues so far ?
How many km have people with lifted coilers done since the upgrade & over what sort of terrain ? (Mainly on road use for a lifted coiler would hardly cause the shock to top out).

I lifted mine about 12 months ago with Kings heavy duty raised coils.
I have been to Cape York via most of the "old telegraph line".
The vehicle performed faultlessy Thumbs Up
Dont let them sell you new shockers they are not necessary.
The whole job took me about 3 to 4 hours.
You will need a specialist to compress the new springs to get them in.

Disconutter here in the UK has also done a king spring upgrade
as far as i'm aware he is as happy as larry about the upgrade
 TLO has left the building.......

Just to clarify ... you fitted the heavy duty Kings Springs and retained the original equipment shocks? Can you tell me approx what sort of increase you got in ride height and whether the ride quality became very much harsher?

I'd also like to speak with you if you don't mind.

I fitted the same King Springs as Norto and as TLO said "Happy as Larry" with them Sheep . They are great off road, giving virtually the same clearance as the air-sprung off-road setting and on road they balance the extra ride height with stiffness such that I believe it's a better ride, a little firmer but not harsh and handles well in the corners - that's with 18" General Grabber AT2s and the original shocks.

I did spot a thread on here some time back from the Greek contingent that they had kitted out a coiler with King Springs and also manufacturered some Heavy Duty struts which were currently being tested on a long haul, rough terrain expedition - at the time these were performing well and there was talk about bringing them out in 2008.

That said - I've stuck with the original shocls for now, as and when they need replacing I'll decide then what to fit. I didn't see the point in changing 2 year old shocks which might last another 3-5 years just for the sake of it. Although, if you do get new shocks it's going to be easier for the fitters as they can assemble the new ones and swap them out directly rather than messing about taking the old coil & strut apart first. So I think they have an alterior motive - a. less work; b. more money Whistle

Whichever you decide regarding the shocks, I'm confident you'll be happy with the King Springs Thumbs Up
 LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

That all being said, I suspect that the Bilstein's will give a much better ride - I know of some owners that are going to the Billies with an SE air-suspended D3, just for the ride improvement.

But - why spend the $ now if not needed.

All the best with the lift - will take it to where it should have been off the floor...

Thanks everyone for you replies.

I have spoken with another suspension specialist place who say the standard shocks will handle 45mm of lift no sweat. Nothing like getting a second opinion.
This, in combination with the experiences of others on this site means that I have no concerns with getting the lift now. I am booked in for next week.

For anyone who is interested, the Bilstein shocks (front & rear) are suposed to be available in March.


What I have found amazing is that in less than 24 hours I have had numerous helpful replies from this forum. Great work everyone !

How was the wheel alignment after the extra 45mm raise, My interest is, my D3 is a air suspension one and for off road trips that need off road hight at greater than 50km/hr I use shortened sensor rods and put them on after I get near to the start of the rough stuff, I would like to put them on at home when I change the wheels over to the Stt's but have been concerned it may wear the tires unevenly on the bitumn road. I have done on one trip 650km on the shortened rods with no issues but that was all off road.
Others also may have ideas on this.

It has been discussed before but I would think it would have some effect on wear depending on have much you shorten the rod.
Dealer just recalibrated my suspension and of road height is much higher, definite to out, very obvious.

Hi everyone

Got the heavy duty King Springs fitted on Friday this week at my local suspension specialist in Penrith (and as recommended by one of the service managers at my LR dealer, I retained the oem dampers). Results were:-
Measurement at wheel arch:-
FRONT
Before - 33" (84cm)
After - 35¼" (89.5cm).
REAR
Before - 33" (84cm)
After - 34¼" (86.7cm).
Note that the old springs (weighing perhaps 30kg) were sitting in the boot of the car when I took these measurements, which might account for the smaller lift at the rear wheels. Confused

As others have noted, the ride and on-road handling of the D3 is definitely improved, although I've only driven it for a couple of hundred k's on city streets and highways as yet. So far VERY HAPPY Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy . For those that are interested, you can have a look at the pics in my gallery.
