So we all have a six month extension on our MOT. I usually get a service at the same time as MOT.
Do I delay both to take advantage of the extra six months, and therefore make an 18 month gap in the service book. Or, do both at the due time, even though the mileage is obviously low, and keep the service book looking good. People in the future will forget the coronavirus effect on MOT. 1955 SWB Series 1 86 inch

Get it done in your own interest to know it is safe 
Son's Fabia VRS quick car due MOT got him to come over as knew suspension top mounts needed changing so started to give it a check over glad I did brakes where so bad lucky the didn't explode the car was not safe to be on the road. Disc & pads all round £65 dread to think if he left it six more month  Welsh Collie Chauffeur Service To Barney & Rooney.

Same conundrum for me with my MX-5. It’s 10 years old and been dealer serviced from new with its next service booked for next month.
Unfortunately, I MOT’d it too early last year (at the same time as it’s service) and lost a month, but the dealer also lifted my leg to the tune of £270 to replace 3 drop links after they failed it during the MOT that was undertaken at the same time as the service. They also wanted several hundred more to replace a single rear shock absorber (which I thought should be replaced in pairs) due to misting although this subsequently didn’t warrant an advisory on the MOT.
My plan was to have the service done at the dealer and then MOT at an indie in a few weeks so that I’m not held to ransom; however the dealer then stated that my insurance may be limited to 3rd party as this was becoming common during lockdown. It isn’t, I checked. 2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT

Just get it done.
The extension thing is going to cost some people a lot of money with their cars as they leave repairs way to long, which they leave to long on the normal 12 month routine.
Plus by doing it asap, you can pretty much guarantee mot slots will be freely at this time of year for many years to come

As a few others have said just get it done, my Disco is due a service and MOT in July got it booked in for both as my local indie is fully open so seems silly not to.

Plenty of garages opening back up now and plenty stayed open as said if you can don't wait the extra 6 month's for the mot as these car's are getting a bit older they do need more care and attention what ever make Discovery 3 se gone

I had mine done days before lock-down.
Doing c. 10k miles a year I change oil & filter every 6 months.

Definitely get it done, less questions to answer should you be involved in an accident. And you can be sure the insurance companies will take every opportunity to reduce their payout.
The requirement is for the car to be legally roadworthy, and although an MOT is not proof of such, it does indicate that you are monitoring the condition of your vehicle.
Had mine done last Tuesday. Passed with no advisories. There are two rules for success,
1. Never tell everything you know.

Based on that report it sounds like you need to change your dealer! Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

Also, bear in mind that it will become a problem September, October, November time getting the car booked in, as there will be the extra work of April/May's cars falling then, as well as everybody that is already due annually.
So two months worth of cars booked in the same space in October etc.!

Had my Disco done on Thursday, always get it done on or around the earliest date.
My local MOT garage owner told me last week that the choice was solely mine as to whether to have it done on the due date or take advantage of the extension. I opted for the usual date. He then told me that a lot of people under normal circumstances get an MOT done without doing any servicing or maintenance during the past 12 months and see the MOT as a reason for "Faultfinding" and repairs after the car has failed the test, usually for lighting, tyres, brakes and steering/suspension faults.
He is expecting it to be chaotic when the extension expires and almost everyone leaves it until the last minute.
As per the previous post, under the extension, the owner/driver is responsible for ensuring the vehicle is safe and roadworthy. I agree the Insurance Companies will be extra vigilant regarding roadworthyness in the event of an accident claim and as well known, look for any excuse/reason not to pay out, other than to the Third Party involved.

One thing to bear in mind with having a test now is that there may not be parts available to fix all faults. My local independent had to fabricate a brake shield for mine as he couldn’t get one.
You can’t take it to a garage for a pre-MOT as if it would have failed an official test, it is not roadworthy anyway, at which point the garage would have to inform you that you may not drive it.
Catch 22
The usual suspects for failure are suspension, brake pipes, brakes discs and pads. You can check most of these yourself. For the suspension, lift under the strut so that the weight is still on it, but the tyre is off the road. Check for movement of the wheel up and down, fore and aft, and rotation. Any slop means worn components. Have a search, or ask for better descriptions- I’m no expert.
