Cheapest ever fix ?
For a couple of months now, I’ve had the dreaded “Restricted Performance” warning come up intermittently, followed by, erm, restricted performance.
I had the fault code read, and feared the worst (P1247-00 Turbocharger boost pressure low)
Only making short local journeys at the moment, I’ve largely been able to drive round the issue, but overtaking a tractor yesterday, the sudden and unexpected lack of grunt on a country road became dangerous.
Being unable to take it to my Disco Doctor of choice (MMP Land Rover aka Disco Mikey) I booked it into my local guy this morning, feeling the familiar LR trait of my wallet warming up.
An hour later he returned my car having replaced a stripped screw and a knackered O-ring. He’d smoke tested the engine and it was immediately apparent that there were 2 leaks, both of which he thought would have been enough to throw up a boost pressure issue.
As it was an intermittent fault, it’s too early to say if it’s fully solved the issue, but it’s looking hopeful that it might be the cheapest ever fix for something that could potentially have been very expensive.
I probably shouldn’t have said that out loud....

When I took my caravan out at the begining of the year ( remember when we could do those sort of things ! ) I found on site the water pump made a different noise and did not pass any water. These things are almost as notorious for expiring at very inconvenient moments as they are for the high cost of replacement.
After looking on Internet as to who could supply a replacement I took another look in the Inaccessible Corner to check the part number, and feeling proper scunnered I gave the thing a couple of whacks with the big wooden spoon I use to prop open the locker lid. The noise changed and the water flowed. Best low cost repair so far.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. Nothing so far Iggy....as it was intermittent, he wants me to drive it for a couple of weeks to make sure it has actually cured it..."Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Good news (you hope). Iv'e always wondered how this smoke test works. Surely if you try and pressurise the inlet system with a smoke machine, it will just blow it into the cylinders on which the inlet valve is open?

Only time I’ve seen it was on the box. I wasn’t expecting him to do it so quickly or I’d have stayed and watched."Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Exactly that
Pressurises the whole inlet system to a low-ish pressure
Fills the intake system/manifolds etc
You do get a little blow by on the piston rings, but not enough to worry about My D3 Build Thread

Does not matter as, if the inlet is open the exhaust will be closed.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

Does not matter as, if the inlet is open the exhaust will be closed.
But surely some of the exhaust valves will be open, and then the smoke is free to escape?

Yes but think about it, there is no time in any one cylinder that an inlet valve is open, at the same time as an exhaust valve.
It’s like one of those water flow puzzles you see on Facebook! Took me a while to get it.
