Discovery 4 not liking being self isolated |
|
Afternoon all. Hoping everyone is keeping well.
Minor issue considering what’s going on in the world.
Not driving around much (using car once a week).
I’ve got a decent battery charger and have it a full maintenance cycle the other week but it’s only getting about 5 days before telling me to start engine as battery low.
Am guessing this isn’t usual ? If not then recommendations on batteries please.
It’s a Stop start late 2015 disco 4
Thanks

D4's eat batteries IMHO.
If it's the original it may be failing....
Mine went after 3 years & a couple of weeks.
If you are getting a new one Halfrauds have a decent one at a fair price - but do keep the receipt as it's the guarantee.

Tip with the Halfords receipts. They now email them to you, so print a copy off, stick it in a sealed plastic wallet and place it under the battery when you install it I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Presume you used an IID to do a Battery Management System reset after fitting?
I did check recently and Halfords are aware of the need to do this and reckon they do so as part of fitting it in a D4 (using whatever tool they have).
Cheers Gary

Yes the BMS will have to be reset. In my case I has JLR recovery with me & they fitted the new battery & did the reset.
I had an extended warranty but the battery was not covered
Accordingly I have no personal knowledge of whether Halfords can reset the BMS, but if it offers a fitting service I would assume that they do whatever is required. IIRC the workshop manual says that a BMS reset should be done on fitting a new battery.
Edited to add:-
This is from Halfords website:-
The Halfords 019AGM Start/Stop AGM 12V Car Battery comes with a 5 year guarantee and is required for vehicles with start/stop technology and/or regenerative braking. The AGM (absorbed glass mat) technology allows up to 360,000 engine starts for use with start/stop functions.
Halfords Start/Stop batteries come fully charged and ready to fit. Most vehicles will require this battery to be registered with the on-board computer system, therefore professional fitting at a Halfords store is strongly recommended.
Please Note: For vehicles with start/stop functionality a standard car battery is NOT suitable.

Mine tends to sit idle for extended periods and only get used for longer journeys so at the moment it's a garage ornament mainly!
When I bought the Disco I read that a low battery is the usual source of a lot of frustrating woes and idioscratic behaviour as there is so much electronics in the thing.
I bit the bullet an got a CTEK charger and towbar electric connector (available in the forum somewhere) so it now just sits plugged in all the time with the CTEK doing its clever stuff keeping the battery topped up.
To date, no issues at all. Starts enthusiastically on the button after weeks of standing. For peace of mind, well worth the relatively modest investment.
Mine's also a 2015 model.
Doesn't do anything for the stop/start battery, but that's not worked since I bought it. Probably needs replacing, but most of my journeys aren't in cities or places where stop/start would be regularly used.

So now even replacing a battery isn't a simple job....
I don't have stop-start - is it still a simple swap out/in for me? 2014 - D4 2010 HSE Nara Bronze

FWIW I never reset my BMS when I replaced the battery with a new one from Halfords, this was about two years ago and nothing blew up, it was fine at the time and has been fine since. D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

I didn’t reset mine either and it was fine although the SS didn’t start working again until the garage did a reset at service time.
