Transfer box calibration Report post

Wheels bing on cornering and clunking in a straight line

I have tried virtually everything

Replaced with used parts from GOS

Front diff
Rear diff
Front prop
Transfer box

New parts

Rear prop
Front hub
Rear handbrake shoes
All new transmission oils (fb ox/ xterm box/ both diffs

Most recent is the transfer box and understand the clutches need calibration

Symptoms seem worse than before after changing transfer box and gearbox oil ( main gearbox appeared over full before oil change)

Does anyone have any ideas

Could it be the gearbox Mx ( 6sp manual)

Would overfilling have masked symptoms fir a while ? Had the car about a year.

Does anyone have a nanocom I could hire / borrow in the GODSTONE / redhill area to try calibration of transfer box

I have tried the process described on here Amanda does nothing

It’s a 2006 manual tdv6

Thanks

Hi

Wonder if the steering wheel angle sensor may cause this, have u had a look to see that it’s calibrated ok

Just an idea and hopefully the more Experienced members will be along to verify that or if its something totally different

Thanks for the thought. Mine is a basic model without the steering angle sensor. I also had the wheel alignment checked early on to eliminate it as a possibility

Thanks

Hi

Ur Very welcome and don’t know how much use it is

All D3 will have a steering wheel angle sensor , because it needs to know which direction the wheel are pointing

Wheel alignment is just to ensure everythimg is lined up correctly according to manufacturer’s specifications

Have u tried disabling ur DSC and then seeing if it still does it

Just trying to think of the basics so at least they can 100 % be ruled out

Are all ur wishbone bushes , drop links etc all ok plse

Plus is there any guarantee the second hand parts that have been fitted are also 100% perfect

There are many here who are extremely knowledgeable who will be able to guide u better

Just wished to run a few things past u to see if they had been done

Alas don’t know how much help that is

Dsc switched off no different

4 wheel alignment done at Kwik fit

True, the used parts may not be good, just unlikely that it’s the same fault

I know transfer box clutches need calibration, just not sure if that’s the answer

Many thks for answering that lot Laughing

Assume Kwik fit have u a printout

My only concern is if they did indeed reset ur steering wheel angle sensor

Any lights showing up on the dashboard

Indeed may be that ref the transfer box

As a side note there also a a fantastic alignment place that way that uses hunter systems, will try and find the details for u in case u ever need alignment done

So if that’s all ok indeed need to get some diagnostics on there

No lights or errors on dash

No printout from keikfit but I could see the computer screens and wheels were aligned

Not sure about reset of position sensor. Still not convinced mine had any. Where are they located ?

How do you reset the position sensors ?

After all you have spent on it would you not consider buying a diagnostic tool? It will help you sort these issues out rather than throwing parts at the problem!

Most people on here use the GAP IID which is a great bit of kit and easy to use. They often come up for sale here on the forum and if you're quick you might be able to snap one. It will save you tons of money too especially if your experiences to date are anything to go by. Whistle

As for your current problem the diagnostic codes will point you in the direction if not actually nail it!
Either way, you are correct in seeking to calibrate the transfer box given the level of rebuild you have done. As GStuart says you do have a steering angle sensor, and it will need re-calibrating if you have had adjustment of the wheel alignment. It may also as suggested be part of your current problem!

I have been looking at what is the best tool for a discovery 3

Looks like the one you suggest are around £500 ? Are they vin locked ?

Thanks

Unless its the Pro version they are VIN locked, however you can buy additional licences from GAP if you want to add more vehicles. I think they are around £50 or so. You can buy second hand ones on here for around £300.

You then need to arrange the change of ownership with GAP.

See this for example, they don't hang around long so keep a sharp eye on the For Sale sections.
