Leisure Battery Advice

A friend of mine who owns a discovery 4 needs to be able to run a 13amp 3000kw hotplate for his events business out of the back, and asked how he needs to set up his car, as he obviously doesn't want the engine running.

my thought were that he needs a second leisure battery and 12v to 3kw inverter installed. is this correct?

Will any garage carry out this work, and how much should it cost?

Advice much appreciated

Ha. Sorry meant 3000W!

He also has other items he wants to run so wants a 13amp plug setup.

is 3000w too big to run off a second battery setup? sorry if a stupid question, clueless when it comes to electrics!

In theory you could, but running a 3KW device would give a really good battery a very hard time, and you might get 15 mins if you were lucky. Lower quality inverters are less efficient, and you might not get 15 mins at all.

Yeah it ain't going to happen off a 12v system. Nothing practical could provide the amps required for 3kW. Definitely spend £££ on a good 240v generator or preferably, as others have said, gas is the way forward, much simpler and also vastly cheaper.

A LPG hotplate makes sense, but if he also needs a 13amp supply he could go for an LPG generator as well.

I have a Honda LPG genny - excellent & can run off mains gas.

As others have said, 3kw/3000w is unviable off a 12v cell. One of our boats has a 1600w inverter fitted but, to run that, it also has a 1080AH deep-cycle lead-acid battery which weighs almost 700kg and cost over £1,200. The alternator required to recharge the battery is also equally beefy.

LPG has to be the way ahead in this case if he does not want an engine running
