Hello All
We have a Disco 4 that has developed a problem with the rear tailgate, basically it will not open. When we press the release, it appears to be sticking / not moving enough to release the tailgate. We cannot gain access to the boot through the main part of the vehicle, as we have a dog guard in place.
its rather urgent we get into the boot, as my wheelchair is in there…..
is there anyway to open the tailgate by other means.
thanks in advance.

Try manually operating the handle whilst pressing tailgate button on the fob? .

Is the battery fully charged? Are any of the door lock actuators sounding tired/slow? .

It sounds like the end your cable release has sheared its L piece.... keep trying what Dean says... someone manually pulling the tailgate whilst someone else pushes the boot release button on the fob or on the dash..
The L piece starts to shear so you can hear the motor pulling the cable but because of the broken piece it has lost its ability to pull the release catch...
There is not an easy way around this and I think searching the forum will show this is a very very common fault. There may be a new secret way of entering but I think you may have to dismantle the dog cage to get anywhere near it.

There's an early thread here https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/tailgate-la...99648.html
Also worth fitting the emergency release in case it ever happens again. I used a piece of strimmer wire. 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

Had a look at the thread above which is good but I am fitting a set of drawers & cargo barrier in the rear of the Landy which would make accessing it from inside almost impossible if it were to fail.
Will need to do some sort of a manual cable pull thingy in parallel just in case it does go while we’re outback.
Anyone done this?

Harry...I think if you search the threads I seem to remember someone using fishing line as an emergency pull off the latch but you’ll have to tuck it up somewhere...

Although the newer replacement cables came with a redesigned L shaped nipple ending...so just replace it with a new cable now???

I can't claim any credit for the instructions - just the link
My own emergency release was much less glamorous. A piece of strimmer wire exiting the RHS of the lower tailgate and (if memory serves) just taped down in a short loop. Inconspicuous and it worked. 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

Just wondering ... how much effort is required to operate the latch via cable/strimmer-line etc. ?
i'm looking at doing the mod but struggling to find a discrete end to pull. So what if i were to make it a push action and use a pivot to switch the direction of effort? how much travel would I need ?
was looking to use bike brake wires for the cabling and I don't expect it would be rigid enough to do a straight push to the actual actuator.
I do have some nice 4mm stainless steel rope which I reckon would allow "push" ... but no outer for it. yet.
