I did not realise 44T lorries go that fast?

Phew! Just getting back after a very long day driving up and down this lovely country, weather got appreciably worse from Nottingham down to Huntingdon. Coming off the latest bit of the revised A14 we had been ambling along at 60 + mph and we were not pulling closer to 44T lorry, he was getting away. Foreign plate he started to brake heavily. Unfortunately he was heading our way too. No signals he just decided he was taking a left at same time as us. A bit scary.

Looked a bit unpredictable so assumed his sat Nav had given up on him with the new A1198 / A14 junction, again no signal but he was in the left hand lane, pretty obvious he was going to head back North to Godmanchester.......well I thought so. Now I was at this time pulling upto his cab to take a right and head South. I have no idea what made me brake but instead of him taking to the A1198 North he decided to head South round the roundabout cutting right in front of me as that unearthly being suggested I stop dead.

I just wish that our van had a camera because what came next left all three of us cringing as he swapped to the right hand side of the new double roundabouts just South of Wood Green Animal Shelter going around the wrong way. I stopped dead again thinking he will be head on now with me! Silence then a lot of cursing at his impudence for he then so we thought must be on for a U turn back on A14. Censored Oh no, this driver carried on South right into oncoming Northbound traffic. Swerving back he missed the cars and HGV’s I know not how. We stayed well back alerted the police he was 60+ on single carriageway down to Papworth where we went separate ways and I thought all HGV’s are limited to 56mph well clearly not the case.

Undoubtedly the worst driving I have ever seen.

ps.......the 101 people got back to advise he had been stopped and “ dealt with appropriately “ whatever that means.

your 101 response must be better than round here. someone recently reported 3 hours plus.

I always go the 999 route with a road incident that is enough to bother me ... bricks in the carriageway for instance. If you've ever seen debris flicked up by a vehicle ahead, you'd be on the same wavelength.

First thing to remember is that HGVs are running on a calibrated speedo.
Your car isn't, your indicated 60mph may well be a genuine 56mph
The lorry has its limiter calibrated every two years but you can gain a Mike or two per hour from new tyres in between

However limiters can be tinkered with, illegally, and some HGVs are pulling a serious amount of horsepower these days

We routinely remap lorries to gain horsepower and economy

My rigids run upwards of 400 horsepower

Perhaps, just perhaps, after 1st January all lorries in UK will require to have a UK registered tractor unit and a UK qualified driver. . . ?

When I say I was 60+ I did factor in 10% , I was closer to 70mph and seeing him move away from me on the A14. He had slowed at old A14 junction. Assuming I was recording 68 mph +/- 10% for the sake of argument ( I tend to set CC at 68) I might be 62 or 73 give or take well over where a 44T lorry should be anyway. New tyres or low pressure at testing/calibration the old tricks are best Whistle

Yes, no issue at all
Doesn't even add to the premium and they are more than happy to accommodate

In many ways we run highly modified vehicles anyway, our entire fleet is refrigerated so we don't have a single vehicle that runs as it left the factory. They are all heavily modified from factory spec anyway

The whole point of Drivers CPC's was the EU's attempt to make sure drivers across the continent were all qualified to the same level
Doesn't work!

I won't employ Hungarian/Romanian drivers.
Simply because of the large instances of forged licence's and CPC's
Thats before we get in to tachograph fraud.....

I'll admit to an accidental 74mph on the M40

Sitting on cruise control in a DAF in the middle of the night, long downhill stretch on an empty motorway.
Only noticed when the Satnav started flashing red
To be fair, the old girl was incredibly smooth and quiet, just gently crept past the limiter by itself

Insurer I doubt will be interested, they never bother us, so many changes made to commercial vehicles after they leave the factory. Normally they ask for total cost of the vehicle when it goes on the road.
