I’ve been having some issues with the rear brakes on the 65 plate D4 HSE Lux I purchased just before Xmas.
It’s a long story, but it turns out the almost new pads in the car were fitted very recently to rear discs that look perfect on the outside face, and hardly worn, but on the inside face are both worn very irregularly. The drivers side particularly looks like the inside pad was only half the size it should be, and the outer @10mm diameter of the disc face is about 1-1.5mm less worn than the rest of the face. There is a distinctive step rather than gradual change. The passenger side one has the same issue but to a lesser extent.
I'm not sure what caused this but whoever changed the pads needs shooting as they must have seen it.
The sheet metal pad clips appear to be the originals, and are not in contact with the disc faces, which was my first thought.
As you can imagine they have started to squeal a bit!
I’m happy the Calipers are good, as they are very free on their slides, and I can push the pistons back in using my thumbs without any mechanical help.
The dealer I purchased the car from has agreed to contribute heavily to the cost of new discs and pads, so no complaints there.
I’m getting to the point I promise.
I’ve decided not to go down the front Brembo 6 pot route at this stage, but want to leave the door open to that one.
But I want to do what I can to improve braking before I start towing my boat when we can get out again.
So, some man-logic justification:
Whilst I’m changing the rear discs it would be rude not to uprate them a bit, especially as a good proportion of the cost is going to be covered by somebody else.
But, uprating the rear brakes before the fronts is downright dangerous unless I want the back of the car overtaking the front (remember, man-logic justification, not factual)
So it looks like I have two choices.
1) Replace the rear discs with standard ones – boring and not worth writing about on here.
2) Fit uprated discs to the front and back at the same time – More like it, and justified.
I’m looking at the Britpart Drilled and Grooved discs which I see others on here have fitted.
Can anyone comment on them please?
Or can anyone recommend some alternatives?
Also pads, I usually use EBC on standard discs, but am open to suggestions on what works well on the Britpart discs or others.
I’ll also be flushing the system with fresh fluid when I fit the Discs and Pads.
Thanks

Yep, good call.
Can anyone comment on the AF 'Black' Performance disks?
I don't want to upset anyone or rock the boat, AF have been good to me in the past like they have to many on here.
But, even with the current discount the AF Black Discs are considerably more expensive than the Britpart ones, so I'd expect something extra by way of performance. Either in wear rate or braking performance.
Has anyone tried both?
Thanks

Thanks Geoffsnook.
What brands are you referring to in each case?
Thanks

Got Britpart drilled and grooved on my D3
No noisier than standard
I'd like to pass comment on the EBC pads, but with less than 80 miles on them, they've still a long way to go to bed in fully My D3 Build Thread
