Lighting strikes twice? Another dead D4

I’ve not been on here for ages. All was well in Land Rover ownership land. Until it wasn’t…
Earlier today got a call from my wife that the D4 had died. No warning, errors or anything. Just a sudden loss of power and funny noise. Sounds suspiciously familiar…
I’m currently sat waiting for RAC flatbed recovery. Theory is a belt has let go. The car turns over smoothly but won’t start. Error codes for cam sensor.
The sceptic (realist) in me strongly suspects we have lost another crank and therefore engine. This happened with our old D3 some years ago. Back then, through some major fortune, JLR footed the bill for a complete new engine. Not so sure it will be as happy an outcome this time.
Waiting to get it recovered to Rugged4x4 in Liverpool (I can almost see their workshop from where it’s broken down!) with a hope they can look at it sometime soon.
I ducking hate Land Rovers.
 Cheers,

Gareth

If the cam sensor fails (in theory) it shouldn't prevent the engine to continue running during it's cycle, as the PCM uses CKP signals to compensate. However, the cam sensor has failed the engine cannot be restarted until the sensor issue is rectified. So unfortunately I would have to conclude that there is an issue with the timing belt or cam pulley.

The only way to know for certain is the T/belt cover has to come off.

Thanks. Assuming it is a belt (and not another crank) what are the chances it’s damaged the top end too?
 Cheers,

Gareth

If the belt has gone there will be top end damage to the lifters/valves and or cam caps but it's not catastrophic by any means, a bit of work though to get it sorted.

Doubt very much it's the crank or you'd have other codes to support that diagnosis, so fingers crossed.

Thanks. Let’s see what happens in the coming days…I’m holding on to the hope that I surely can’t be so unlucky to lose 2 engines to crank problems!
 Cheers,

Gareth

It's not common for the T/belt to fail unless it's maintenance has been ignored, although I have seen one break after 9,000kms.

It may be something much less sinister so don't loose any sleep over it until you have the covers off. Thumbs Up

Agreed. Hypothesizing the worst merely entices worry.. A proper analysis need be completed.

Finally got our car back again and wanted to update on the cause of this...

Turns out both timing chains had snapped, the drive belt had also snapped, and one of the camshaft pulleys had sheered in half. No idea which was the root cause. Ended up having both top ends rebuilt with new rockers and tappets and associated.

Running like a peach now to be fair!
 Cheers,

Gareth

Haven't we had a few on here showing pics of failed pulleys? Suspect that as primary failure ?

Most people seem to spend their time worrying about crank failure when the focus of their concerns really should be on the cam pulleys and timing chains especially after 150k miles.

Glad you have it sorted now and if you look after it you should see many years of trouble free motoring, Thumbs Up

Only done 75k miles!

Had to have 2 turbos replaced 12months ago too.

Last LR we will ever buy for a long time. Really wanted to go for a D5 at some point but lost all confidence now.
 Cheers,

Gareth
