oil consumption

I got my 3.0 engine renovated by Oval Autos after overheating.
My car is a TDV6 MY 2011.
Change of engine was made at 122 040 km.
New filter and complete oil change was made at 122 746 km.
Now the car has done 130 798 km and I have topped up 3,3 litres of oil.Three times. 1l at 125 074 km, 1l at 127 353 km and 1,3 l at 129 994 km. After topping up meter has been at max. Oil level now is 2 notches down at 130 797 km.
This means that in 8 052 km the car has consumed 3,3 liters of oil plus 2 notches.
There is no smoke and no apparent leak.

I think this is too much.

What can be wrong?

I would consider that excessive also, if there is definitely no leak then there's only one other obvious possibility. The burn may be slight and therefore not noticeable in the exhaust from the drivers viewpoint.

There was a turbo drain mod for this engine but I assume Oval would have changed this during the rebuild, it may be worth investigating this with them. Also, get someone to drive behind you and see if they can see traces of blue smoke from the tail pipes. There should be none especially on a fully warmed up engine.

Turbo drain done...

I will have someone check the exhaust.

Peter,

Some additional points as mentioned in my email to you yesterday to check;

1/ Have you actually measured out the oil by draining it? It could be that the oil level sensor is at fault and you are over filling the engine.

2/ Have you checked the turbos? It could be that one of them is blowing more oil on the air side. If this is the case, we would take the matter up with our turbo suppliers.

4/ Release the intercooler pipes from the radiator at the bottom to see if oil is collecting there?

3/ Check the crankcase breather/collector and pipes. Easy enough to do as it is on the top of the engine. Use an air line and blow down the pipe that goes to the turbo air intake pipe.

5/ Check the oil temperature of the oil when hot. If it's too high, then oil will evaporate excessively and get sucked in to the breather. The cause is oil temp being high is usually incorrect oil or the oil cooler being ineffective (blockage caused by build up of 'fur' in the matrix by incorrect coolant, antifreeze)

6/ Check the air filter. Poor condition can cause more draw from the breather pipe on the air intake to turbo, therefore not allowing the breather/collector time to drop the condensed oil back to the sump.

7/ As PROFSR G mentioned, get somebody to drive behind you and see if there is any sign of smoke. Try it in the daylight and at night in headlights.

Once all this is checked out and everything is ok, I'm more than happy to replace the engine under warranty as you know from talking to other members. Once I've stripped down the engine, I'll share my findings here.
