Private plate
Hi all, when my D4 was stolen a few weeks ago I put my private plate straight on retention, can I put it straight on a new vehicle or because it was a stolen vehicle do I have to wait a certain amount of time? cheers
You need to speak to the police. If your stolen car has been found it's reasonably straightforward but if not, they may advise you to wait. I will PM you in a bit with more details..

IMHO opinion, the stolen car now has a new reg no, it just has two meaningless bits of plastic/plates on front & rear. If you have the new retention doc then you are free to put that on any car, even if it’s the original one if it’s returned.

On a slightly different thought.
Years ago I had a Sierra Cosworth stolen off our drive (distant memories of that which I wish I had now) and we had to wait 10 weeks or so for the 'non-retrieved' payout. At which point the insurance company declared the private plate was theirs as they had paid out on the car
I fought them for weeks before they finally relented and handed it back (in the form of a retention certificate).
Worth tapping your insurers up at this point (maybe)!

Given it's all online now then surely you apply to put it on retention and pay the £80 and 3-5 days later you get the retention certificate in the post and good to apply from that point on to any vehicle you want or sit in the drawer till ready.

Certainly in the past, as kilovolt has said, the private plate would stay with the vehicle until the matter is resolved so that the vehicle retains an identity, and when the insurance company pays out they then own that identity.
I had to buy back a private plate from an insurance company on a written off car, so not exactly the same, but similar enough to think about. Not sure about now in the age of digital transfer.
Have you had the retention certificate yet?
Did you transfer a plate on to the stolen vehicle at the same time?
I think you need to tell your insurance company what you've done before it becomes an issue.

If you stick it on retention straight away and then the vehicle is recovered and returned presume you're not refunded the retention fee?
